Personal Narrative: My Dance During The Spring Break

Improved Essays
During the Spring Break of 2015, I had a two hour dance camp Monday through Thursday on top of my regular classes. On Monday Carly challenged me to dance 50 hours that week; I laughed. However, I wanted to accept her challenge as much as I could so I set a goal to practice 24 hours that week. Each day I worked on a specific dance. These consisted of the Reel, Light Jig, Slip Jig, Single Jig, Treble Jig, Hornpipe, and a set dance. Each dance has two steps that are done on the right and left foot. On Tuesday, I chose to do Light Jig. This is a simple dance that is done in the beginner levels. I discovered that it is extremely hard to practice Light Jig for an hour, but I did it. When I told Carly, she asked me why I had been practicing Light Jig. I told her my plan to practice 24 hours that week. She laughed and said: “I like you.”
After two years of dancing I was able to get a school dress. This is a costume that the advanced dancers in Killarney wear. The day came and I was in class. We were almost finished doing our cool-downs when Connie--Carly's mom-- came in with a large cardboard box. I wasn't paying much attention until she tapped me on the shoulder and told me to come to the backroom. There, she proceeded to open the box.

Would I just have to stand here, alone? The teams danced in groups of two, sharp and precise. Their faces were a mask, yet seeming to show glimpses of the competition in their eyes. Then they were done. I was mortified, frozen to the spot. All that work for what?! They couldn't see the old wooden floors and how sometimes, if you did your steps wrong, there was always a chance to injure yourself. They couldn't see how many times I had messed up before I had perfected my dance. I couldn't believe it had happened, and in front of everybody. Holding back tears, I walked off stage, not bothering to bow to the judge. It wasn’t long before the tears fell and a sob escaped my throat. I’d stood there,

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

Stepping on that blue mat I thought I had forgot what I had learned that week to make the team.…

A Thousand Experiences Throughout life, individuals face different obstacles and struggles; my obstacle was my tendency to be shy. For example, when I was faced with social pressures like speaking in front of a class for a presentation, or meeting new people, I would be a nervous wreck. My palms would sweat, my voice would tremble, and it took all the strength I could muster to overcome my irrational fears. I only had a small, albeit close knit group of friends due to my introverted ways.…

It was the end of third grade and all of my friends and I were talking about who we wanted as a teacher the next year. Everyone wanted Mrs. Graham or Mrs. Friend because they were considered the “nicer” teachers. I didn’t really care who I had as long as they didn’t yell very much because it always scared me when they did that. I was the kid who always got upset when I saw that the teachers were yelling or mad at someone. My mom had told me that she didn’t request any certain teacher for me to have so it was going to be a surprise the next year when I found out.…
