Personal Narrative: My Dance At Pottsville High School

I’d been through this before, but all I wanted to do was go home. There was a possibility of things I could do wrong. I could forget my dance, bomb my tumbling, or maybe not even make the cheer team. As I pulled up to the Pottsville High School, all the worries in my head got worse. I could not perform in front of these judges without messing up.

The cafeteria was where we had to go to warm up. I walked into Pottsville High School and saw around 40 girls wearing all the same thing: a plain white t-shirt, all black shorts, and white cheer shoes. It was mandatory for us all to wear it, we also had to have our hair pulled up. I instantly went to Breckyn and Kaitlyn and started talking to them. Kaitlyn’s dad had brought us all Chicken Minis from Chick-fil-A, we were starving. While we were all eating, the 9th grade math teacher, Mrs. Ayers had her daughter Alex announce who we were trying out with since we tried out in pairs. I was paired with one of my friends, Chloe’. I quickly scanned the people in front of me and counted six judges. The first three were Mrs. Falls, the high school cheer coach, Mrs. Ham, the former junior high coach, and Mrs. Ayers, the new junior high cheer coach. The other three I did not recognize, they had to be judges according to NCA. NCA is the National Cheerleaders Association, and they make all the rules for cheer. Me and Chloe’ then had to turn around to start the cheer. The next few minutes went by in a blur, I didn’t mess up. When it came the time for us to do a split, I didn’t think anything would go wrong. I went down into it, but I didn’t go down all the way. I forced myself to go all the way down, and I felt no pain. The rest of the tryout went amazing, I didn’t mess up at all and I walked into the cafeteria smiling when it was over. There was a slight pain in left leg, but I didn’t think there was anything

My time at Barnegat High School has helped me to become who I am today and will most defiantly impact what I will do in the future. The teachers and my peers have all been an influence on my life and during the four years that I spent at the school, I have done some things for the school and the community as a way to thank them for giving me the opportunities that they have. It was they who pushed me to keep trying and striding to succeed and without them, I would not have accomplished what I have today. One of the things that I am most proud of doing is helping to bring new clubs and activities to Barnegat High School. This year, with the help of other students and advisors, a new club made it into the ranks of the diverse sea of clubs and groups that already exist.…

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

I always felt like everyone had a special talent accept me. Some could paint, act, play sports, but that was never me. I was just a little girl being bullied for having a blanket and sucking my thumb in first grade. Always left out and being told I would never amount to much, took a big toll on my grades. All throughout elementary school I was in the “special” classes.…

I was so happy I was near the front of the line because I wanted to stand out and make them remember me. While sitting there group after group kept going in it was getting close to my turn. While lined up behind these huge gray doors waiting for the judges to call us in, I didn’t think I could make it. My knees started shaking and I felt the butterflies in my stomach going crazy. Stepping on that blue mat I thought I had forgot what I had learned that week to make the team.…

Cheerleading Tryouts “Come on Lauren you’ve been doing this way too long, you’ve been on the team every year since you were 14.” I said to myself as I walk through the halls of my High School. Today is May 24, the first day of the annual cheerleading try outs and for some reason I’m extremely nervous even though I’m a three year veteran. I go through my classes talking to all my other cheer friends saying how this is going to be a breeze and how we can’t wait to start the season even though my stomach is literally overwhelmed with butterflies. DING DING DING!!!…

Hi Ms. Pierce, Hope you had a wonderful break and a nice day, The word I would use to describe my break is deciphering because I got a break from dance and school. For example, I was able to sleep to try to avenge the early wakings during school days and early dance practices. In addition to that, I had nothing to be concerned about. Having a break from both school and dance gave me time to think about myself and what I wanted for my future; besides, I was able to unwind. The time I had was crucial to me because sometimes in the middle of all the activities in the year I have no time to think.…

“When your music begins, you will be in competition mode.” I took a deep breath, it was showtime. I was introduced to the world of competitive dance in August of 2011 and ever since, dance has been the outlet for all of my emotions. I started off as a shy little girl who hid in the corner, barely extending her limbs as I attempted to mock those in front of me. As time elapsed, I persevered through challenging ten hour practices and the taunting of my peers.…

All that work for what?! They couldn't see the old wooden floors and how sometimes, if you did your steps wrong, there was always a chance to injure yourself. They couldn't see how many times I had messed up before I had perfected my dance. I couldn't believe it had happened, and in front of everybody. Holding back tears, I walked off stage, not bothering to bow to the judge.…

Arms outstretched, my chubby little 3-year-old feet clad in each of two small plastic food containers, I am caught forever in a grainy photograph sailing across our kitchen floor in the best approximation of a spiral a toddler could make. In ballet, a spiral is an arabesque and I love dancing. (My mother said I tap danced the last trimester before I was born.) It’s true that I can’t get from one room to another without dancing, but when I announced to my parents that I wanted to figure skate, they wondered how a 3-year-old could know that she wanted anything so surely. They took some convincing and only after I’d ruined all the food storage containers, did they decide that I was serious.…

People striving to achieve the impossible will always be appreciated and needed in the world. Therefore I agree with the quote “we need more people who specialize in the impossible.” Whenever someone achieves the impossible, it gives other people hope and inspiration. Achieving the impossible is also favourable for both the person who achieves the impossible and for the people who are influenced by it. Sometimes, accomplishing the impossible can be beneficial for all of humanity.…
