Personal Narrative: My Dad

Decent Essays
When I first applied to seeds and told my father I was accepted, I thought he would jump for joy because this was such a prestigious program, but I was sadly let down. It didn't seem as if he was upset or enthusiastic about my enrollment, he was undetectable. My dad, a five foot seven, dark skinned Haitian man with a buzzcut filled with many grey hairs was like a sour patch kid, never showing his true emotions. Most people find him unapproachable because of his loud, aggressive voice laced with his thick Haitian accent. Being a child who worked her butt off trying to better her education, of course I wanted to be praised by my parents but obviously my dad didn't get the memo.

One day, one of my closest cousins called me to congratulate me

As for my father, I would rarely see him around the apartment since he had to commit to two different jobs – day and night. As a child, it is really heart-breaking to see my parents suffer, but it has motivated me to become someone much greater than I could possibly imagine. Additionally, I want to prove to my parents that coming to America was not a waste, rather is an exceptional opportunity for success, and excelling in school is the only way to transform every pains and tears into joyful cheers. With that in mind, I devoted my time studying and figuring out ways to adjust to this unique American culture. Next, I started to participate in workshops and events relating a variety of careers, jobs, colleges, and scholarships, which was very useful and beneficial in assisting me to plan out my career or pathway and what I need to do in order to achieve my ultimate goal after high…

I think back to when you first applied for that competitive internship at Dean Witter; you knew that it was ambitious and that only one person would gain fulltime employment at the end of it, but you still went for it. I’m so grateful for this, dad; you’ve showed me that you don’t have to be rich nor be extremely intelligent to succeed in life. Instead, you showed me that determination and a hardworking nature are the keys to success and I will value this advice forever. I remember as if it was yesterday, that day at the basketball court when you told me that I would never become a professional basketball player. Initially, I agreed with you; little did I know you were challenging me.…

My mother didn’t get too far in her education, only third grade because money was tight at the time and she wasn’t the only child, she was the first of nine all getting as far as third grade. My father on the other hand was the only child to go far in school, having finished all of high school with grades equivalent to straight “A.” Unfortunately my dad had lost his mom at thirteen and my grandfather’s damn machismo pride got in the way of my father’s education. He was given a scholarship to continue school. With this scholarship my father was really excited to continue his education but when he got home to tell my grandfather he simply responded “No you have to start working now, going to school is for women. ”My father had been breaking his back working for his dad since the age of eight.…
