Personal Narrative: My Dad

Either I paddle to safety, or I give up. Noticing that my heart rate was extremely high and my breathing was impaired, I sat up on my board to try to calm myself down. Breath after breath, in the powerful windy air, I started to feel better. I mustered enough courage up to start to paddle back to shore. Motivation was key, and luckily, that is one of my best attributes. I was at my favorite surfing spot ,where I always feel calm and happy. I was surfing at Mondo's right after a huge storm, which caused the ocean to be really dirty, musty, and full of dangerous riptides. I had just caught a fun wave that ended in the middle of a riptide, where I was all alone. All the other surfers were where the waves were, and I was panicking in a deep swell.

The only thing that was life changing is that my dad changed jobs from working in Iowa city and being gone all the time, to switching jobs in Clarence so I’d see him more. When I was littler, me and my brothers would get up super early Christmas morning so that we could hopefully open all the presents that were underneath the tree. We would separate the presents and try to figure out what was inside each one, while we waited for our parents to get up.…

My life in 800 words… It seems like an impossible feat to describe someone’s lifetime in such a small amount of words: the good, the bad, the days of adventure, the days of crying, and all the days in between. Throughout my life I have been blessed to have parents who saw the value of education and pushed me to do the best I can. They suffered greatly for my education and by sending my to St. John’s Prep, they both suffered financially as well. My childhood can be argued as the opposite of the stereotypical American family dynamic.…

In my first interview, I have interviewed my father who is currently 60 years old and works as a machine operator at a technology company in Fremont for over 25 years. During his adolescence developmental stage, he lived in Ameca Jalisco, Mexico with my grandparents. He did not attend college after completing high school because his family was not able to afford it. Since he did not go to college, one of the many jobs he had was to go out in the crop fields to help his father pick up various types of crops to bring back home for supper. In addition, my father was at home most of the time to help my grandparents with preparing supper, complete chores, and feed the animals they had in their backyard.…
