During the fifth week of class Food: The Key Concepts, a book by Warren Belasco, was assigned. As the title suggests, this text is an overview of conflicting and seldom thought of elements of food. Chapter two, “Identity: Are We What We Eat?” discusses the conflicting ideas of identity. The chapter concludes that food is memory and identity, which other people use to create bonds. However, sometimes people do not eat what they are, when they are trying to make a statement.…

The Gourmet Problem Reading “Today’s Special” by David Sedaris made me realize that I not only agree with his disdain of gourmet food and its seeming takeover of normal restaurants with normal food but also that I am a food snob. First of all, when I order a traditional meal of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans, I expect the meatloaf not to be mixed with prunes and drowning in a peach sauce accompanied by mashed potatoes made with cauliflower –where’s the potatoes?- and vanilla green bean amandine. Then I realized that while others are snobbish about ‘normal, boring food’, I am a reverse food snob. Food does not have to be bland…

The sound of sizzling meat, steaming vegetables, and family laughing while anxiously waiting for an intense dinner as the sun brightens the kitchen was one of Christy Jordan's favorite ways to spend a meal as she explains in Southern Plate. Christy Jordan’s cookbook Southern Plate presents Jordan’s most loved “no-fuss southern favorites” such as Chicken and dumplings, homemade banana pudding and daddy’s rise-and-shine biscuits. The thesis that Jordan tries to get across is that southern homemade food significantly in her opinion is the best type of food and that no other person or restaurants cooking would ever be as good as her families. My intention in this paper is to discuss the APATSARC elements and argue what the author’s main argument is.…

David Zinczenko uses his personal childhood experiences as a form of pathos to capture the audience. He begins by describing how the separation between his father and mother left him with no dinner selections besides Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. David Zinczenko approaches the theme with sarcasm and humor, but as he continues to discuss his position on the topic; he becomes serious and passionate. For example, David says “I tend to sympathize with these portly fast-food patrons, though. Maybe that's because I used to be one of them.”…

MOD Pizza was started by two “retired” entrepreneurs. A husband-and-wife team, Ally and Scott Svenson, had already started and sold two successful food empires. Given that the original RBG brand’s target customer was a mother in their mid-30s to 40s who, along with her family, led to an active and busy lifestyle, we are going to emphasize the brand message of convenience (easy and quick). Based on the case, an easy-and-quick baking and kids play a bigger role in driving purchases in the Canadian market and they value experiences baking from scratch and believe this experience fed fueled memories of happy moments. However, as our target customers are busy working moms, we believe that they do not have much time to prepare all baking materials from scratch with kids all the time, the RBG’s cookie dough should position with easy and quick baking process that still gives chances baking together.…

In the US, Panera Bread is known for having fresh breads, coffees, soups, and sandwiches. It is a sit down restaurant, or take out, that operates with a front counter to order meals, then a pick up location. Panera is know in America as a fast-casual food place where consumers can grab a sandwich, soup, or salad and enjoy a calming atmosphere. We will be positioning Panera Bread much differently in the Netherlands. We want consumers to see Panera Bread as an inviting restaurant that serves high quality, fresh breads and traditional Dutch soups.…

Sitting around the hardwood table in the dormitory, we constructed together a meal that we felt embodied the term “comfort food” for all of us. This recipe, called Spicy Ramen Rice Casserole, held the desirable characteristics we sought after such as: spiciness, home-style flavor, and warmth. Most of the ingredients for this recipe came from Jewel grocery stores and ranged in price from $2.79 for both the beef ramen and the cheesy rice to the pre-cooked meat at $3.99. The jalapeños and hot sauce were both “purchased” from a group member 's home, in the same way food items are exchanged between inmates. Using these ingredients, we followed the recipe as called for and were thoroughly surprised with the overall normalcy and appeal of the food…

In assignment two, the multimedia evaluation, I categorized pizza, a notorious “junk food”, as a nutrient-rich food. I strategically organized my video, beginning with an attention-grabbing introduction, establishing three criteria, and ending with a call-to-action conclusion. Throughout my evaluation, I employed various rhetorical strategies to supplement my claim and convey a message to the audience, pizza lovers and/or skeptics. The use of these strategies combined with the arrangement of the film create an effective evaluation, establishing pizza as a nutrient-rich food.…

    Self Surveillance Report

On Thursday, I arranged an occasion to meet my friend and a burger with them, but my own ‘neurotic self-surveillance’ would not allow me to eat an eggplant parmigiana burger (Guthman 2003: 55). Forty-four mentions of ‘green’, ‘vegetable’, and ‘healthy’ peppered throughout my diary signify my relationship to the food that I choose to eat, particularly because those words are consistently followed by my citing feeling “good’ after eating that food. My feeling ‘good’ was evident after eating vegetable-laden food or fruit, as though it were an achievement (Guthman 2003: 53). Accordingly, eating an eggplant parmigiana burger would have made me feel “unhealthy and gross” and “greasy”, and so I chose a small broccoli salad instead, and ordering a vegan burger that would be ‘up to scratch’, so to speak, later. Similarly, my disappointment and, at its height,…
