When I was 9-10 years old I lived with my mom, dad, and sister in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania. Lake Ariel was a small town where all you would see is corn, fields, and woods. We had lived in this house for two years and I had a good group of friends that I had met from school or extracurricular activities. I attended Western Wayne Hamlin elementary school and was in fourth grade. The school district was huge, covering six townships, but my school was small.…
When one thinks of Iowa, one does not necessarily think of cultural diversity. The more and more I think about it as I have matured, it was exceedingly challenging to grow up as an Asian in my community. That is because I sometimes had trouble understanding the culture of others and my own culture at my young age. When I was younger, I found it very challenging to understand many of the things my peers and teachers were saying figuratively. For example, I had difficulty understanding jokes, so I took them literally and did not know they were joking.…
I knew I wanted a place where I could expand my horizons, meet new people, and leave with a better understanding of the world and its cultures. Out of my top three college choices, the University of Toledo was the most diverse. The university is large enough to attract students from all over the nation and other countries, while maintaining the culture of Toledo itself. I am very interested in studying abroad, and the University of Toledo has wonderful programs for this. Most recently, the campus had International Week which was very fun and interesting.…
My own cultural competency is built on a lifetime of international experiences. I grew up on the Dominican Republic, where I attended high school. Later, I was awarded a scholarship by the Cooperative Association of States for Scholarships (CASS) program to study Graphics Communications at Modesto Junior College (MJC), Modesto, CA. I was surrounded by cultures different from my own, I was encouraged to identify and value both the commonalities and differences of the human experience. As a student, exposure to diverse peoples was instrumental in shaping my worldview and values.…
I believe that I will be comfortable working with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. I will have a certain level of flexibility in functioning with different group of people. This is because my most of the profile dimensions are in the middle of the extreme ends. This means that I can easily adjust in any kind of environment. On comparing my Cultural Profile with my home country's plot, I found that there is a very close relation between them.…
Growing up, my Native American ancestry was made apparent to me by my grandmother. Of course my mother’s appearance, with her long dark brown hair, tanned skin tone and her deep brown eyes led me to assume my ancestors heritage, but it was my grandmother who introduced me to the native rituals. Rituals such as the burning of sage to cast off negative entities, and the making of dream catchers each year on my birthday. My native american descent is the Delaware Valley Indians. This Nation of Indians is part of the Algonquian Culture that has a teaching that predates the Biblical Noah's flood and the Matriarchal system of Native Ancestry therefore recognizes both father or mother in relations.…
All my life I was confused with my identity. My sexual identity comes first in mind, but the most important confusion that I faced was my cultural identity. As a child I lived all over the world: China, Hong Kong, Korea, and United States. I spoke Korean at home, Chinese with my friends, and English at school. When I was an adolescent I became very confused my cultural identity.…
I come from a culturally diverse background and have changed schools four times in three different countries in my school career. These opportunities gifted to me from God allowed me to get myself out of the comfort zone and become vulnerable so that I can stimulate internal growth and wisdom that I can share right now with all international students. What helped me on my journey to make the most of my international experience was obtaining knowledge about cultural norms, values, behaviors and issues. I have also learned the importance of the flexibility to adapt to new situations, open-mindedness to encounter new values, resourcefulness and problem-solving skills. Are you wondering how to obtain this skill set?…
Stir-fried tomato and scrambled eggs is one of my favorite dishes ever since I was little. It is a common dish in China, quick and easy to prepare, and popular among students. -Adapting to cultural differences -reminds me of my childhood -recall my happy childhood memories -food preparation I grew up in a very traditional Chinese culture. Although I have been in America for ten years, it is still a challenge to adapt to cultural differences. When I was in high school, I never eat lunch while I was in school.…
Robert Louis Stevenson, the Scottish Poet, once wrote, “Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but of playing a poor hand well.” In other words, Life won’t always deal us a good hand, but how we play these cards of life may in turn be the better play even with the good hand we wanted. My cultural identity is best described by the word moral. My cultural identity has been molded in many ways. Three of those ways are through: my family’s catholic beliefs, my schooling, and reading spider-man comics.…
¬¬Cultural and ethnic identities are not things that you are born with. Sure your ethnic heritage may determine things like the color of your skin, but an ethnic identity stretches far deeper than just skin color. Cultural and ethnic identities are things that are learned over time. They are formed through a collection of teachings, experiences, and choices. This autobiography will explore how my ethnic and cultural identities developed throughout my life.…
Being torn between two cultures is a stressful struggle which is also damaging to the self-esteem. A struggle I know well being a black girl growing up in a predominately white environment. Having been born into a family that values education, my parents immersed me in environments where I would receive the best education. However, it turns out racial diversity was non-existent in these environments. My junior year I transferred to a new school having an array of cultures and races.…
Essay Question 1: International Experience Across my career, I have sought out opportunities to learn about, travel to and teach in ethnically, culturally and economically diverse communities. International travel experiences along with working among such diverse communities has given me a greater understanding of my students and increased my abilities as an educator to meet their needs both instructionally and socially. Each passing year of experience has added a rich new layer of understanding and depth to my teaching. I have continually sought out chances to deepen and strengthen my understanding of multicultural/multiethnic students through constantly learning new instructional methods that continually deepen my practice. This in turn…
The Theory of cultural Differences works in my everyday life by multipool reasons and reasons that my not come as a norm to most people not in my culture. In my workplace and with family and friends, I experience multiple Cultures that are different than mine. I myself am more of an individualist instead of a collectivist. The reason that I am more of an individualist than a collectivist is for the reason that if I am not up to my standards I have nobody to blame but me. I know how many hours and hard work I put in and if I fail I am the only person to blame.…
Taking the time to go to a destination of culture and different ethnicities, gives the option to open the perspective of different ways of life. The journey from rural Manhattan to Jackson Heights and Flushing Queens opens the eye to many ethnic groups. From the moment on the Subway to the change to the No.7 train, the atmosphere changes and cultures clash. Many would be blindsided and oblivious to the diversity, but going to this destination with the intention of seeking different ways of life opens the eye. Traveling through Flushing and Jackson Heights I witnessed different ethnic groups.…
