My own cultural competency is built on a lifetime of international experiences. I grew up on the Dominican Republic, where I attended high school. Later, I was awarded a scholarship by the Cooperative Association of States for Scholarships (CASS) program to study Graphics Communications at Modesto Junior College (MJC), Modesto, CA. I was surrounded by cultures different from my own, I was encouraged to identify and value both the commonalities and differences of the human experience. As a student, exposure to diverse peoples was instrumental in shaping my worldview and values. I was an active member of MJC’s International Club, where I learned about the beauty of diversity.
