Personal Narrative: My Creative Writing

Improved Essays
Ever since my "young'un" days, I have wanted to do something creative with words. Chomping on my candy necklace, I wistfully proclaimed – “I want to make people think and feel, laugh and cry.” As an adult, I write short stories, novels, poems and articles. I have worked in the publishing industry in and around New York City – though not as a writer. Therefore, it is with excitement that I launch this website to concentrate on publishing my own creative writing. What do I write exactly? I write fiction for adults, young adults and children. My pieces vary between commercial and mainstream to more literary and experimental. I write various categories such as comedy, fantasy, mystery – even the occasional intergalactic science fiction

My writing experience: I didn’t start to read until I was in first grade. Every week we would go to library to check-out two books and take a test on the books we read on a computer. Every day in English we read a short story to ourselves then we would play games dealing with the story to make it fun. To be honest I never really did a lot of writing in Elementary , Middle, or High school so I can’t pinpoint when I started writing. In essay writing I learned its always good to express yourself with your own opinion.…

For most students, the moment the bell rings for summer, they never speak to their teachers again. Usually this applies to me as well, but last year, it didn't. Ms. Dirmeyer, my 7th grade Language Arts teacher, still keeps in touch with me, even though she’s not my teacher anymore. She takes interest in my writing, and has done several things to help me improve. Ms. Dirmeyer sends me emails with writing tips, along with worksheets directed towards improving my writing.…

My favorite author as a child had to be Richelle Mead and, later, Edgar Allen Poe. Reading their work has inspired my writing style. Being sucked into their worlds, seeing what they saw, filled a desire deep within myself. I craved to have a book of my own, to create a character and live through them, and escape from my own reality for awhile. I’ve written many stories so far, and I’ve produced a film called “Donut Druggies”,…

Unless I have a very strict and short deadline, my writing process begins with thinking and reading about the topic or subject matter of my paper. I don’t do a structured free writing or idea mapping session, but rather just read a bit to get familiar with the subject matter and to get my brain thinking about the subject. Once I am ready to begin writing. I start with the thesis statement is on the topic, is formatted correctly, and matches the purpose of the essay.…

For as long as I can recall, I have been a creator. Before I even received my first essay prompts in school, as a child I already crafted stories to be transcribed by my father, or scribbled down by my own hands, or played out by toy dolls. I never even realized my natural inclination to writing until suddenly, around the third grade or so, my teachers and peers began noticing this peculiar aspect of myself. My essays were read aloud to the class, the teachers instructed me to assist my peers who struggled with grammar, the librarian gave me personal recommendations on which books were a satisfying read - sure enough, my aspiration to be a writer had been diagnosed.…

My writing process usually involves me prewriting, planning, drafting and then editing. I often try to revise the paper while I’m writing it, which often seems to create more problems as I stop my thought process on what I was writing and focus on something else. While this has slowed me down, it has never stopped me from finishing something. I have always had an easy time writing in an environment where I don’t have any tight restrictions and can write freely about ideas for characters, stories, and worlds. I usually have trouble coming up with the right words when I’m required to write about very specific topics or ideas.…

Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

Writing has never been one of my strongest skills nor my favorite. Even though I enjoy reading another person’s writing the thought of someone else reading mine just sends chills down my spine. I wouldn’t consider myself a decent writer whatsoever. This defiantly gets in the way of how I feel about writing at times, because it makes me insecure of what others are going to think after they finish reading my essay. When I signed up for ENGL 1301 I was quick to assume the course was just going to consist of reading a lot of material and taking quizzes that covered the readings.…

And here we are again, another book. I can honestly say that I don’t feel any different. I think I’ve reached a level of consciousness where I’m not defined by accomplishments. I think writing a book is a big accomplishment, but I’m more excited for the impact that the book will have rather than the fact that it is out.
