Personal Narrative: My Contribution Of Migration To The Jewish Community

Decent Essays
I immigrated to Canada from Israel, though my parents came from the Soviet Union. Growing up in Toronto, an organization named the Jewish (Russian) Community Centre (JRCC/JCC) reached out to my family. They helped us with funds in times of need. Furthermore, I spent majority of my childhood either at their affiliated kindergarten or summer camp. Seeing how they assisted families in need, it inspired me to devote my own time into helping them continue managing their organization.

Firstly, I continuously (starting at the age of 12) came to the JRCC kindergarten and volunteered to feed toddlers, ensure kids’ safety, entertain them and organize activities. I worked with kids aged 1 till 6, while a special few have become closely attached to my hip.

Secondly, the Jewish Community Centre needed paid counsellors for their upcoming camp. I decided to volunteer because I wanted to give back. Going to this camp as a child, I was driven by the knowledge of everything the organization had done personally to help my family.
I volunteered for two years and managed to work with kids aged from 1 to 10.

Queen’s university is consistently praised for its strong reputation, and united community. Being at Queen’s means I am being given something I need and want, an enlightened education. Whether it is through the Summer Student Recruitment, United Way, or simply helping fellow students and professors, is it my responsibility to assist others. I believe I am a philanthropist because I cannot “take” something from someone without giving back. A strong community is measured by the quality of its connections ,the interdependency of its members, and the power of their support and mutual inspiration. Therefore, I believe I can be a valuable asset to Queen’s University while helping to strengthen their community, current values and

My Family immigrated to the United States when I was just two years old. Growing up in an unknown place surrounded by a foreign language was difficult to say the least, if not for me then for my hardworking parents. This may have not been the most convenient of circumstances being raised in total isolation with no family, but it transformed me into the woman I am today. From this I have been able to appreciate my surroundings more, knowing the things people take for granted in the United States are privileges in other countries. Drivers complain about potholes in the roads, where i think of them as lucky to even have roads.…

Everyone treated other’s contributions with respect and consideration of their ideas and views. I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

Underserved communities are the group of people who has been treated unequally because they have insufficient funds to cover their expenses, they have medical problems, or they have been discriminated against. We were comfortable financially. The car and even the garage followed new apartment, furnished with imported furniture, high class by Soviet standards. My work situation was also good- I had friends at work, and functioned as a secretary of our group union, but the bug of immigration was in my heart and in my brain. Actually, I need to mention one very important factor about myself- from the early age I hated Soviet government, I hated corruption, lies that were constantly fed to us, our useless communist bosses, and I dreamed of going to Israel. America was not on my agenda.…

Being born into a Jewish family in Mexico, religion was constantly present through my childhood. I went to a Kosher, Jewish school from Pre-K to second grade, where Hebrew and Jewish history were as an integral part of school as math and science. Although my family is not orthodox, we did celebrate all of the Jewish holidays from Hanukkah to Tish’a B’Av. It was only when me, my parents, and my sister moved to Florida, that I left the tight knit Jewish community that I had been a part of for my entire life. I began attending an irreligious school where I was no longer surrounded by people like me; on the contrary, I was one of only few Jewish kids in my classes.…

For my service hours for Public Health class, I served at the Boys and Girls Club where I worked with children from the age of five to twelve. Upon arriving at the Boys and Girls club last week, I came across a few thoughts of how it would be to work with children. The first thought in my head was that working with children isn’t going to be challenging and might be the easiest service I have done. I expected the work to be very stress-free and less overwhelming than any other services. Another expectation I had was that volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club would be like any other experience, like the one of many times when I have tutored kids.…

In manifold years, the African American community has suffered harshly from institutional racism. As Blacks were forced into becoming chattel property for Whites, they were also dehumanized from their identity. Torture was also included in oppressing blacks as they planted fear into the mindset of African Americans that they cannot even love their own skin color. Lack of opportunities such as educationally, economically, and politically have been the main factors that our community lacks for "success” due from oppression. Philanthropy is a way for our Black Leaders to restore the lack of resources such as meals, housing, educational opportunities, and guidance in the communities.…
