We as Humans beings often coexist and live together as common creatures. Often times there are moments involving misinterpretations, fights, disagreements and conflicts between individuals. After 4 hours of math, science and history it was finally time to get our stuff and walk over to the junior high for the 8th grade graduation rehearsal. I needed to go get my stuff from my locker with the other 150 kids that also needed their stuff. I fight through all those people and managed to get to my locker. I grabbed my backpack with my lunch and the book I’ve been reading “From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler”. Now that everyone has their stuff, we started walking.…

Growing up, conflict was something I always viewed in a negative manner. It was to be avoided at all costs, and whenever it did occur, it would usually destroy me. The more I have grown, the more I have realized that conflict is key to development, and that our world needs it to survive. I recently sat down and made a list of the ways I handle conflict in both a beneficial and negative manner. It seems that I have more negative qualities in conflicting situations, but these can be fixed by learning more about conflict itself.…

It is the morning of July 4th, 2008: I groan as my mother gently whispers, “teneshi yene mar (Get up honey)”. Struggling I open my eyes and notice the trembling cabin, I turn to my mother with a look of concern and she reaches out her hand and squeezes my own looking up at me, “we are going to be okay Mar”. A couple of moments later our plane has landed, we gather up our belongings and make our way towards the exit filled with people attached to their screens and MP3 players. The airport is filled with an undercurrent of anticipation, impatience, and boredom; bodies scramble back and forth from one gate to another. My mother, attempting to balance three children, clasps my hand, holds my little brother to her waist and calls back to my older…

Growing up, I noticed, when approached with conflict, my sisters and my mother would often state that they did not want to talk about it or would simply leave the room. I now have a phrase for this: the exit response. For us, the exit response was always temporary. If the problem was serious, it would eventually be brought back up; if it wasn’t, then things usually got better on its own. While my dad is often the first to use the voice response, I have noticed that my dad often chooses the loyalty response, too.…

Although many people avoid conflicts at all costs, they are an important, and often necessary, part of interpersonal communication. If one avoids confronting someone with a problem and instead lets contempt fester, the relationship will suffer and may end. Conflicts have a reputation of bringing out the worst in people, however, this does not have to be the case. Conflicts can be resolved without much harm to anyone’s feelings if both parties are respectful and understand that while the other person does not see things as they do, they still have a right to their own viewpoints. Conflicts can be uncomfortable, but they often build stronger relationships.…
