Past two guarded gates in an old airplane hangar, is a robotics lab at the NASA Ames Research Center. During the day, it is filled with scrap metal, blue banners, and heavy machinery. In the evening and late into the night, it fills with girls: girls who are determined and passionate; girls who want to laugh and make friends; girls who want to learn everything they can about building robots. These girls make up my community: the Space Cookies.

Space Cookies is an FRC team, a Girl Scout troop, and a community of girls enthusiastic about math, science, and engineering. We are committed to sharing this enthusiasm with new members, other teams, and the community. We hold workshops to prepare rookies for build season, help teams earn sponsorship

Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

One day, little Billy Hopkins was drinking chocolate milk in the kitchen while he was drawing a picture of the moon. He loved everything about space, but he loved the moon the most. He also really loved chocolate milk; he would drink glasses of it in one setting if his mom would let him. In Packing for Mars, Mary Roach communicates that the most interesting part of space travel is humanity and the complicated obstacles that come with it. Roach’s purpose is to argue that although they present difficult challenges, much can be learned about humanity through space travel. To support this argument, the author compares humanity to machinery and the opinions of scientists to her own, provides anecdotes concerning the humanity of astronauts, and describes the struggles and morality of those changed by space from their answers to an interview. The first rhetorical strategy present in the excerpt is comparison.…

At the same time, 3 people are living in constant free-fall 250 miles above the Earth in the most expensive home ever constructed. And lastly, two spacecraft, both more than four decades old, are hurtling away to the outside of the solar system, both bearing messages from mankind to the inhabitants of the stars. When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…

As stable middle class jobs are steadily shipped overseas, mechanized, and replaced with low paid, part time work, the American male has lost his ability to comfortably support a family and has therefore lost part of his masculine identity. Faludi contends that “to be a man increasingly [means] being ever on the rise” (Faludi 11). In the past, hard work ensured steady, if slow, improvement; many people would work at the same company for the majority of their careers with reliable raises and a certain future. However, modern society has made jobs inconsistent. A recent paper published by Princeton University finds that “long-term employment is on the decline in the United States” (princeton.edu).…
