Personal Narrative: My Colombian Culture

Decent Essays
My parents are both Colombian and they came over to the United States 18 years ago which is almost my age. My parent's Colombian culture was deeply rooted in them as I grew up because they had just migrated from over there. It has influenced the way I am because living in Miami everyone’s Hispanic roots stay with them in a way because mostly everyone is Hispanic. My Colombian culture has influenced the way I dress, the food I eat and the way speak. In Miami, it is very easy to find a Colombian bakery or restaurant which I occasionally go to, to eat arepas and empanadas. My mom still has a bit of her Colombian accent and whenever I speak Spanish I find myself speaking with a bit of that accent as well. Whenever a family member comes from Colombia

Societies are constantly changing, so when I go for vacation the DR the way my cousins speak, the songs the talk about and even the jokes they make, are foreign to me. It means hearing people talk about The Fresh Prince of Belair in school and being the only person not participating in the conversation. All in all, being Hispanic means different things to different people, but for me, it means having a close relationship to my family, being able to navigate through two different worlds, yet not fitting in in neither…

My whole family was born in Mexico and I’m the youngest child which means that all of my brothers and sister grew up for most of their childhood in Mexico and my oldest sister even got married over there. My mother is a strong believer in continuing cultural traditions even if we are in a different place.
