I wasn't terrible, I could hit a 90 mile per hour fastball and I could, for the most part, field a ground ball. However, I was definitely not about to be scouted by the college scouts.…

It all started in senior year of high school, a moment where, because of my lack of effort at certain times of my teenage life, I was left with very few options regarding where I could go pursue my education after graduating high school. It is important to emphasize that although I wasn’t sure what exactly I was capable of, I was sure that I was capable of great things and high school failed to inspire me to become the best person I could be. I was disoriented yet self-assured. Luckily, thanks to some thoughtful people who guided me in the right moment, I was able to get in to the Macklin Business Institute at Montgomery College and I was given the opportunity to try out and get recruited to play for MC soccer team. The experiences that followed…

“Hi Malcolm, I’m Coach Spear, and I’d like you to consider playing soccer at Davidson.” I had played the “beautiful” game of soccer for as long as I could remember, starting in an organized league at the age of three to be exact. An invitation to play as a team member in a highly regarded college soccer program was the culmination of hundreds of league games, dozens of travel tournaments, and too many practices to count. The idea of attending such a prestigious college and having the opportunity to continue to play soccer is a personal accomplishment was very exciting to me. Soccer may have opened a door, but I believe that several interests in addition to soccer, combined with the educational opportunities that Davidson has to offer, will help me open many doors throughout life, shaping a personal identity that will be unique among many.…

Known for having above-average skills and speed, I made the JV team my freshman year and moved on to Varsity as a junior.…

Practice was light the day before the game. There was minimal running with mostly set plays, and things like that. We got the usual spiel about drinking water, eating healthy, and getting plenty of sleep, but we would all stay up until two anyway. Although, something was different about the team, there was an anxiety or something of the sort radiating off of each player. Everyone was thinking about what would happen tomorrow at the first game of the season, Pike versus Guerin Catholic.…
