Personal Narrative: My College Admissions

Decent Essays
My college search has brought me to many universities: visiting campuses, and talking to students, alumni, and faculty. While I could receive an excellent education from any of these schools, Notre Dame offers something "more." I first noticed this something "more" through a contact I made with Kyle Cowdrick, ND class of 2015, who I have been emailing back and forth with over the last year about admissions, Notre Dame, and the college experience. I once asked him why he bothered to use his precious time to mentor me, someone he barely knew before, his answer: "It's the Irish way".

The something "more" was again demonstrated when admissions officer Lashane Saddler made a special trip to my small, rural high school essentially just to visit

Cedric never thought he would get in a good school such as Brown University. One day he gets mail from Brown and was nervous about it. “He neatly tears it open and unfolds a multicolored packet with a white letter on top. “I know applying to colleges is the last thing you want to do right now, but you might change your mind,” a trusted friend told me. It was December of my senior year of high school, and college application deadlines were approaching quickly. I was recovering from a major illness at the time, and wasn’t ready to think about college. My plan was to spend a year living at home and working before I pursued higher education. In the following months, my recovery progressed rapidly.…

My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…

On Wednesday, September 21st, the junior and senior class of my school went to Franklinton High School—where we were introduced to post-secondary institutions such as state universities and local community colleges. I admittedly already had a fair idea of what I planned on doing after school. My “carefully thought-out plan” was this: I would go to Northshore Technical Community College in the summer to get my CNA so that I can gain the patient-care experience necessary for my later plans for college. I would then attend LSU for four years and earn a bachelor’s in dietetics, and possibly minor in psychology. Afterward, I would attend a PA school somewhere within the US—possibly the one at LSU.…

During the college search process, I've learned that I am a take-charge person. Before applying to college I did not have an older sibling or parent telling me what to do, therefore I had to figure everything out myself; which included family trips to visit colleges, the application process, and countless meetings that I made with my counselor to make sure I was on track. A personal tradition that my family has is that every Sunday morning my father cooks all of us pancakes and we sit and eat together before we go to church. Although having pancakes every week may seem like it would get old, it has the opposite effect, and I look forward to the quality time with my family every week.…

f looking at primarily grades or test scores, the somewhat recent method of aggregating all of an applicant’s attributes has made Lafayette College a more progressive and diverse school. Admissions officers have also developed a more fox-like approach to prospective students. With the progressive ability to understand that a student is more than just one attribute, admissions officers use observation, intuition and tolerance when making decisions. The college admissions process continues to change because of the growing belief in the two themes, which can only increase the quality of life for students and colleges alike.…

I had started my college search at the beginning of August of senior year and after 4 months of researching, I narrowed it down to three options: Illinois Institute of Technology, Lewis University, and Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. I applied and was accepted to all three schools. Later on in the year, I attended campus tours to get a more personal feel for each institution; however, campus tours did not really influence my pick of my college of choice since my primary focus was to attend the school that was the most affordable and would help me succeed academically. I reviewed all of my choices by weighing the Pros and Cons of each school using information gathered by each of the tools previously mentioned. Eventually, I made my choice: I wanted to attend Lewis University in Romeoville, IL.…
