In The Ethics of Right versus Right, they discussed four core value groups to help decipher ethical dilemmas. Out of the four core values discussed, my ethical code, have compassion for other people’s struggles whether I understand their struggle or not, is a problem of individual versus community. It is easy to look at the world through my perspective and easy to prioritize problems as I would prioritize them. It is also easy to look at the world through my experience and dismiss things that I struggle to identify with. In other words, it is easier to look at the world through the lens of my community, and not through the lens of people outside of my community. Community can be defined as people in my inner circle, in my town, or in my country. For me to successfully have compassion for people’s struggles, I would have to seek to understand what their struggles are, likely, without a frame of reference. This value is of particular interest to me because I am a psychology major and have a great deal of interest in researching positive psychology, the study of happiness. Defining what happiness is, what causes happiness, and how one can increase their happiness is something I am excited to explore in detail. The video discussed three categories of ethical thinking, one, Mataethics, which asks if what is right the same for everyone, in this case, the pursuit of happiness is likely a health goal for most people, the question is what make people happy, which is different for everyone. Second the video discussed Normative Ethics, which contained four sub categories; Virtue Theory, applied to this portion of my ethical code is pursuing happiness, is individualized, in my case, studying happiness in order to help other improve their happiness, playing the guitar and singing, in another, thing that increases my happiness, spending time with my family, and learning new interesting things, increases my happiness, these things are good for me, and are in line with the first portion of Normative Ethics. Second is the Divine Command Theory, while I identify as agnostic and lean toward atheism, I do identify that having a spiritual component to life contributes to happiness. For me, this portion of normative ethics applies to the Virtue Theory because today what people decide is their Divine purpose is highly individualized. For me, I have been
