Personal Narrative: My Code Of Ethics In Social Work

As I travel through this educational journey I am starting to realize that social work is a profession that chose me. It is a profession for individuals with a strong desire to help people cope with issues in their everyday lives, some work with special populations and work in specific settings. The ability to adjust and adapt to change is an important characteristic of a social worker because people are constantly changing as well as their environment. As a professional, and as implied in the NASW; the social worker must always do what is in the best interest of the client. Throughout my life I always felt as if it was my duty to make people happy rather it was with friends or family members, it was not until this course that I realize what social work really was, and that it was ok if I was not able to fully help everyone I encounter. My field placement is at a non-profit organization called Operation Home that provides critical home repairs to low income families. A few weeks ago Charleston had a huge rain storm and we had several callers inquiring about providing low income housing, major damages to their home, as well as home repairs that were over the organization’s budget. In a matter of 4 hours we had over 30 calls. Operation Home could do the repairs on some of the homes because there was money in the budget for the areas but the organization did not want to take the risk. I felt horrible turning people away and referring them to the American Red Cross and FEMA who was turning them away as …show more content…
As I reflect on the discussion I had with the director and the case study we completed in class; ethical issues are just a set of principles that can be applied to give individuals clear choices. If you think about it we make ethical decisions everyday with things as simple as choosing what to wear. For most females we think about if I wear this will someone in the office be offended? What will they think if I wear this? Is this appropriate for work? We are constantly concerned about something or someone other than ourselves.
