Personal Narrative: My Coaching Strategy

Coaching Strategy As I prepare for my future job in coaching I will continue to practice interacting with player during my summer job. During the summer I coach a basketball camp from ages 5-14. Coaching this camp is early practice for me because I get to coach the different age groups, which help with how I interact with players. It helps because I have to change the way I speak to the different players that I have.
With the younger ones I have to be very specific and a lot more patient than I have to be with the older boys. The reason for that is because most of the younger players that are there are only there because their parents needed a baby sitter. The others love the game, but just are not sure how it is supposed to be played. So with the smaller children I have to start from the beginning and get them to learn that they have to dribble and not run with the ball. With the little ones they seem to get off task and start throwing the balls everywhere, so

When I did my practice, I made sure from the start that people were paying attention using a strong firm voice. For the beginning of my practice I made it competitive from the start, and everyone one wants to win so everyone was focused. Even though I made it competitive, it was fun as well. During the drill I had them do, I would make sure to walk around and encourage everyone. Not only would I encourage them, but I would also give them tips if they were failing. I’m glad that I was able to be a part of this class because I was able to learn more of what I thought I already knew. I will use these competitive strategies in the future to keep my players engaged, because I don’t want to have boring practices. I’ve been a part of some of those and I just couldn’t wait to get out. My goal is to have my players excited to get better and feel that they have accomplished and learned something by the time we are

Specifically basketball coaches such as my travel team Coach Gary often influence their players by implementing certain teachings, in contrast to my elementary school Coach Whitehead the more aggressive approach in coaching style worked better than a more passive style. When there is an objective it can be accomplished in many ways, although several one perspective is better than the other. Even though younger kids may be harder to grasp their attention too much leniency can just result in horseplay. Furthermore leniency is ultimately detrimental to the entire team as a whole.…

If the answer is yes to either of those questions, you may think that soccer and cross country are the same thing or have the same concept, but they don’t. After playing soccer for nearly my whole life and eventually playing competitively in high school, I have grown a passion for the sport. This is why I decided that I would take up coaching as a way to gain some experience in the world of sport management. Luckily, friend of mine asked me to help him as an assistant coach for the under-12 soccer team he was coaching in the Ormond Beach Soccer Club recreational department. I saw this is a great opportunity to gain some experience in coaching and see how the sport is played through the coach’s eyes rather than being the player or just merely a fan of the game. Ever since I started playing, I have always thought of what it would be like coaching others and teaching younger players some of the things…

Waking up at 6 AM every morning during the summer and attending to the young children of Pacifica, California is not the average person’s ideal goal for summer. But for me, it was all I needed and more. Previously, I had never worked with kids. Sure, I occasionally helped my grandma babysit my little cousins, but other than that, I did not have much experience. I quickly learned how to adapt with over 100 hours of service at the Boys and Girls Club and I couldn’t be more thankful.…

For my Coaching/Teaching Behavior Observation I decided to observe the Grand Valley State University Women’s Tennis Team. Most of these girls aged in range from 18-22 years old. They are in season during the fall practicing 4 days a week along with traveling to go to matches all around Michigan. I observed a two and a half hour practice and getting to see a coach “in action” was very interesting to me. After learning about many different concepts during class, such as positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, and punishment I was able to tell what methods the coach used.…

As a coach in the sport of basketball, my role into instructing technical, tactical, physiological, and mental skills are very straightforward. Firstly, in basketball, 3 specific technical skills I coach are discrete skills, serial skills, and continuous skills. For Example, as a discrete skill in basketball, I would teach a player how to rotate the basketball off of his hand. Also, and example of how I would teach serial skills in basketball would be a sequence of standard ball handling movements such as crossing over or going behind the back. Lastly, through the instruction of technical skills, I would teach the continuous skills of teaching rhythmic drills such as running organized basketball plays over and over until it is in a well-organized fashion.…

I have had more successes in life by keeping it simple. Complex plans require detailed attention, excess preparation, multiple contingencies, and often are unsuccessful unless the flow is constantly positive with every piece of the puzzle fitting perfectly within a dynamic and changeable environment. Although many tried while flying a fast moving jet, to include myself, I rarely saw complex plans succeed. From my experience watching as a spectator and analyzing the human factors in sports, it seems to me that keeping it simple was the secret for success for many coaches and teams, too. Assumptions: before any mental plan will work, I first need to ensure the following have been accomplished.…
