Personal Narrative: My Clinical Teaching Experience

Improved Essays
There has been much to take away from this experience. I have learned a lot about myself, my teaching style, students, the pedagogical methods of teaching mathematics, and likely many other things which I have yet to process. At the onset of this semester, I chose two different goals that I wanted to reach as I progressed through my clinical teaching experience. Those goals were to be more flexible with the way I teach, and leave my comfort zone of direct instruction and involve the students more in the learning process. Throughout my time at Cedar Cliff High, I have been able to notice progress toward those goals each of different proportion but progress nonetheless. I am pleased with the progress I have made during this experience and anticipate …show more content…
Typically, I would plan a lesson, or have a certain vision in my head on how I would want my class to go and stick to it hardcore. While this may be a good to have an idea of how you would like things to go and execute it, I wanted to make sure that when I explained the concepts the students understood even if it meant going off script for me. The more I got in front of the class and taught, the more comfortable I felt with making mistakes in front of the class and fixing them. I was really paranoid that I would make a mistake while teaching and thus destroying my credibility to the students. However, I realized this could be beneficial in a number of ways. I could ask the students to find my error which will force them to think critically about the concepts we have discussed. It will show them that I too make mistakes. I am not a perfect mathematician and I must continue to work on my skills despite my years of studying mathematics. Finally, it is good for them to see that you need to struggle through problems occasionally in mathematics. I am not implying that I need to take all class period to find an error or even that I should not work on fixing my mistakes. I am merely saying that when this does occur, for me to take the time to find a dropped negative or a multiplication error could be beneficial to my students. Because of this, I am not as uptight any more with the way I am running my class. I realize that I do not have to be on script for every part of the class in order for the class to be a success. If my students have learned during my class I have succeeded in my goal regardless of how we arrive

My day started a bit off, I had an emergency that morning that made me run a bit late for clinical. This made me miss some important information such as, how nurses in NCBH hand over to the next shift, but aside that, I had a wonderful day working with nurse Mrs. Osei. She welcomes me by introducing herself, which I responded likewise. She took me with her to do her morning rounds and administer medication to her assigned patient. After we were done with her morning medication, I went to one of her patient whom I was assign to by Mrs. Natasha to perform mini mental survey and general assessment on the patients.…

It’s 0500 in the morning, and Taylor is getting ready for her first clinical as a paramedic student. Taylor is 5’2, looks as though she is 12, and has a heart larger than life. When people would ask why she chose the career field she is in, she would always respond with a smile, “I’m an adrenaline junkie, and this gives me a fix like no other.” People often wonder what inspires people like her to do what they do for people they don't know, and it all comes back down to something as simple and being the light in the dark, the calm in the storm, and hope amongst the chaos. Working in a field that is so demanding of your energy, your time, and your emotions, can really drain someone.…

As a leader, I seek to participate actively and productively in the field of global health leadership and health policy and to fill a strategic position in a multinational institution working on promoting health, particularly in Africa.…

On Wednesday 29th April 2014, I was assigned to the same four patients I had the day prior. One of my patients was admitted for sepsis of the R) knee following a total knee joint replacement two months prior. He was a 67 year old Maori gentleman, MRSA positive with a history of gout, hypertension, GORD, bilateral total hip joint replacements and R) sided weakness following a MVA in 2011. During handover, it was stated to us that this patient was due to have his IVABs at both 1300 and 1400. When I saw the times, I thought something was slightly odd as I recalled one of his antibiotics was given early morning the day prior and is a 12 hourly antibiotic.…

This is key when having group discussions about math. Children need to feel confortable when expressing their opinions and answers in discussions about math. In order for this to happen, children need to feel that their interactions are positive. A teacher can achieve this by using all students’ responses and answers as a learning opportunity, whether the student’s response was right or wrong. Instead of telling the child that their answer is wrong a teacher might say, “I see where your coming from” or “You’re on the right track.”…

Arguably, the best word to describe my background as an educator would be ‘atypical,’ as I did not follow the ‘prescribed’ or ‘typical’ trajectory, yet I have been an educator since the age of nineteen. Actually, at first I was a teacher; it was not until my late twenties did I transform into an educator. At nineteen, I taught dance and drama for the Brockton Community Schools. I was on hiatus from my college education because of a financially debilitating car accident. A few years later, I resumed my college education, as a Theatre/Dance major at Emerson College, but went on hiatus again a few years later, with only 2.5 credits remaining to earn my bachelors.…
