Personal Narrative: My Clinical Experience At The Salvation Army

Improved Essays
Like any other clinical experience, going into the Salvation Army I set goals for what I would achieve during my learning experience to focus my learning and enrich my knowledge base. My first personal goal was to go into the experience with an open mind and allow myself to learn more about this population and the people I would care for. This goal was achieved because I can talk about moments that I experienced that contributed to my growth of knowledge and awareness to this population. This goal was reached by sitting with multiple individuals over their meal and talk to them about their hardships and what they were going through. This allowed me to share my compassionate heart and listen to people who needed someone to talk to and hear about

The site that I visited was Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC. I went to a sermon, with some friends, that took place on a Sunday night. When we arrived at the church, we stayed together and observed the site. The members of this church all seemed to be within their twenties and thirties; there were a few younger children and a few older women and men, but not many. Most of these people seemed to be from Christian ethnic backgrounds or just unaffiliated with any ethnicity.…

I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…

My day started a bit off, I had an emergency that morning that made me run a bit late for clinical. This made me miss some important information such as, how nurses in NCBH hand over to the next shift, but aside that, I had a wonderful day working with nurse Mrs. Osei. She welcomes me by introducing herself, which I responded likewise. She took me with her to do her morning rounds and administer medication to her assigned patient. After we were done with her morning medication, I went to one of her patient whom I was assign to by Mrs. Natasha to perform mini mental survey and general assessment on the patients.…

Since I was first accepted into the graduate clinical mental health counseling program, I highly anticipated my first experience of actual counseling. I never expected the difficulties I would face upon my first encounter counseling a client. With my client unaware of the reason for being referred to me, asking “what brings you in here today?” turned out to be the wrong question to ask. The more appropriate way initiating a counseling relationship begins with introductions and obtaining background information from the client increasing the trust level between client and the counselor. During the session, I detected my “machine gun questions” meaning I never provided my client adequate time to respond before I asked another question; as a result,…

From a little girl, until now, I have always been raised on the principle of giving back to your community . For over seven years I have been an active volunteer at the Inidantown Food Pantry. Though it seems like a minute role, it is a very impactful one. Indiantown is a small cited triangulated between Okeechobee, Stuart, and Palm Beach that, by statistics of the 2016 Census, houses just a little over 6,000 people.…

My clinical experience so far has been quite interesting, because I learned basic clinical procedures and preventions that I know will benefit me as a nurse in the near future. During lab, we discussed infection control, personal hygiene, and isolation precautions. These procedures impact my personal health and wellness, because I need to ensure that I am using the proper techniques in order to keep me safe. Also, I know that it is important to make sure my patients are not at risk of developing hospital associated infections.…

I am currently a senior at the University of Maryland studying engineering and physics and I feel that before I move onto graduate school or move into the work force I would like to have the experience that is AmeriCorps. I want to have the experience for a couple of reasons, some more selfish than others. For one I do feel that I have been very blessed in my life. I was able to get a good education and never have to worry about too much in life, and for that reason I feel that it is my duty to give back to my community and I believe that AmeriCorps is a great way to do that. Which leads into my second reason, and my urgency of wanting to do AmeriCorps as soon as I graduate.…

Growing up in a town of about 5,000 people cultural differences were few and far between. Everyone in my town was pretty similar; white, catholic, and family oriented. Many days I wondered how I could expand my knowledge of other cultures. Then, my junior year of high school, the opportunity to attend a mission trip through my parish came about. Catholic Heart Workcamp, often referred to as CHWC, was the name of the program.…

My brother recently had surgery at the VA Hospital in Lexington, and once he thought he was himself again, he pushed to go home. The problem was that he had no one at home to care for him. His children live in California, and he couldn’t come with me because I was leaving for a week. I told him he had to stay in an extended care facility. The smell of rubbing alcohol makes me feel at home, as does the white floors that squeaked when I press my shoes hard enough. Although this place was filled with sickness and sadness, it was even more filled with happiness and positive energy. I loved this place. I loved the nurses, the doctors, and the patients more than anything. I would learn more about the lives of each individual every time I visited, and hear the amazing stories the families had to share.…

My interests in counseling is fuel by hurts and pain of people I observed throughout my lifespan. From the time I could speak, I saw family members, being taunted, by traumatic event that occurred throughout their lifespan. As I watched the hurt and pain of others consume them, I watch them suppressed the pain, in a harmful matter. For the future suppressing the pain, like substance abuse became an unconscious systematic coping method for stressors. Furthermore, as years progressed the hurt and pain presented itself through violence, verbal, and physical abuse.…
