Personal Narrative: My Clinical At The Vine Clinic

Decent Essays
This week I was at the Vine one day, and I also started my clinical at the Health Department. For the Vine Clinic, I did a three siblings 72 hours intake. They were all boys. I felt bad for those boys for the difficult environment they were living in. Those boys’ parents are currently not allowed to visit them due the verbal abuse and domestic violence. From the interview, we found out that each boy has his own problems. With the youngest sibling, he was exposed to drug in the utero and currently has behavior issues. His grandmother (current guardian) does not institute any consistent disciplines at home. The middle sibling has an ADHD disorder. Grandmother states he has an anger issue and cannot control his emotions when he is mad. As with …show more content…
The patient population that they are seen there are mostly low socioeconomics. The people that work described the place as the last resort for most patients to get the care that they need. An interesting case that I have never encountered so far was a 5-year-old girl who has acute pancreatitis. This is not a common diagnosis in a primary setting. The child came to the office last week and has been complaining of abdominal pain for a while, to an extent that she was not able to eat. She also had a low-grade fever. Due to her unable to taking in any food, the care provider at the office referred her to the ER. The child ended up was admitted to the hospital. She came back today because her symptoms still persist after couple day discharged from the hospital. The care provider obtained her lipase and amylase to ensure she is fine. The results came back in the afternoon and they were still elevated. The care provider was concerned and had to make phone calls the GI specialist who was caring for the patient while in the hospital to come up with a care plan. She then relays that message to the patient’s parents. From this case, I see the importance of primary care providers in the role of care

The care that staff gave these children helped level the playing field for some of them. Despite their differences, all patients, first are foremost, are united by the fact that they are people who just want to improve their heath. As someone who is passionate about connecting with and helping others, I am interested in more than just the medical problems that people might have; I am interested in the patients as people. These experiences made me realize how important understanding the whole patient is.…

In March of 2016, I was involved in a freak accident while volunteering for NHS, leaving a portion of my spine broken. I spent two weeks in the hospital, one of which was spent at Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Hospital, where the goal is to get you out of the hospital room and walking again. To my surprise, during my stay there I was the youngest person in the whole hospital, with all of the others being well over forty all with differing reasons for being admitted. As a patient myself, I knew how gruesome the recovery process was both mentally and physically. Even with so many people visiting and showing their support, it was still an incredibly hard journey.…
