Many years ago, when I taught preschool, I had a student in my class with sickle cell anemia. She was only four years old when she was in my classroom. She could not always communicate with me when she was not feeling well. At the age of four, she simply did not always have the words to say how she felt. It was important as her teacher to be aware when she started to untie her shoes and take them off all the time due to swollen feet, this was usually my first indication she wasn’t feeling well. It was also important that her mother and I kept in communication to be aware of any symptoms we observed.
