Personal Narrative: My Childhood Memories Of Middle School

Lunch I was not the most socially adjusted 7th grader. Who was? Thirteen was a difficult time in anyone's life. The majority of adolescents were in the throes of puberty, in that awkward stage where you don't know what to wear, do, or say. I had it worse than most. I was a private school kid, having spent my entire educational existence until 6th grade going to the local Lutheran school. As one of only two girls in a class of five, and the only girl staying in Perham, my social skills were stunted to say the least. This lead to an abundance of excruciating memories of my first year at middle school. Looking back on these memories now, I have learned an important lesson. Time changes the initial perspective on painful memories. The lunch room is the social center of a school, especially at my middle school where the entire grade ate at the same time. People sat with their friends, unless they did not have any. Being forced to switch tables was humiliation itself, but joining the volleyball team during the summer meant that I did not have to sit alone. I had a place at the table, somewhere to belong. At least I thought I did. As I walked toward the table, I immediately knew something was off. The girls I sat with always looked …show more content…
I got older, I got wiser, I got a little less angry. Examining old memories lent a different spin to ones that were less than pleasant. A realization hit me: they were being kind. Those girls could have humiliated me by simply refusing to let me sit; instead, these children showed tact beyond their years by suggesting alternatives rather than outright rejecting me. I applaud them for that. They suggested a change gently, sparing my feelings as best they could. Remembering it now, there was no malice in that girl's voice and no animosity in her eyes. Now, as a senior in high school, I wonder if I would have handled an unwelcome guest intruding on my normal routine as well as those young ladies

Most of the time, classrooms are sat up in rows, with each student 1 behind the other. This class was split up in 4 different groups, with 2 boys in each group. Pacing walking over to my locker, my music was blasting. Happily, I recall listening to one of my favorite songs, and I found myself strutting throughout the hallway. Quickly stopping I started laughing at myself, as I slowed my walking down to a slower pace. Finally, I had concluded to smile, yet I was elated inside. The surface of my face was emotionless, as my eyes drifted past my locker outside through the back door.…

Middle school affected me in various ways, such as adapting to changes, befriending my peers, and dealing with discrimination. Getting accustomed a different environment was such a challenge. On the second day of middle school I thought that it was a good idea to make new friends, I kind of took the whole "new school year, new me" thing too serious. I tried to talk to the girl who sat beside me in my Science class and I believe that a tree had more of a personality than her.…

“Don’t forget, the paper is due next Wednesday!” My 8th period teacher, Mrs. Oakford told to my class and I as we streamed out of the cramped classroom on a Friday. We couldn’t wait to bust out of the schools doors and claim our prize of a short freedom for surviving another busy, exhausting, and slow week of middle school. I rushed to my locker, grabbed everything I would need for the homework due Monday, threw it in my bag and headed down the hall collecting my friends to walk to town to start what I would hope would be a slow but fun weekend off The weekend went quicker than I wished and before I knew it, it was late Sunday night and I still hadn’t done my homework, I realized this and got to work.…

Prior to middle school, I thought I was satisfied with my position. I had friends, got along with my teachers, excelled in sports, and got decent grades in my classes. Back then, I thought this well-roundedness I sought between these necessities would offer me self-satisfaction. Little did I know, however, that I was going to confront this well-rounded nature of mine during my first awards ceremony in middle school. Among the most intelligent, artistic or athletic of the students present there, I was the one of the few who simply struggled to stand out.…

In the seventh grade, I faced a large transition in life. The previous year I had experienced middle school for the first time, but I would make that entrance again. I moved from Texas to North Dakota, where seventh grade was the first year of middle school. I took on those same fears and hopes that I had faced before, but in an unfamiliar place where I had no one except for family to give me support. I tried a lot of new things that year, mainly wrestling.…

But as the next year progressed, I had seen a change in people 's personalities as cliques had formed and people 's attitudes began to turn. The emergence of a “popular crowd” formed around those who were wealthy and athletic, demonstrating their superiority over those who were not. This begins to affect their identity as they begin to believe that they 're superior to others. I can remember that anti-bullying committees were set up to combat the actions of these fortunate few with little success. Eventually by the end of middle school, there was little that one could do to join a new friend circle.…
