Personal Narrative: My Childhood Concussions

Head Collisions Many people know me as the clumsy or danger prone girl. I tend to get hurt a lot. Most of the times it is a quick recovery and I am back at whatever I like to do best in no time. During the end of my junior year and beginning of my senior year I got diagnosed with two separate concussions. These incidents happened within five months of each other which isn’t good when playing a sport that uses your head a lot. Both of my concussions happened the same way, they came from playing soccer. I have had a total of three documented concussions throughout my life time, but the two almost back to back is when I decided I should end my soccer career. I had hit my head on the goal post and fell back, leaving me extremely dizzy once I got up. The next morning after hitting my head I had never felt so out of it or nauseous I knew things weren’t going to be good. I went to the doctors and took the concussion test. This time it was a little different I had to take a verbal exam and had to give feedback directly to my doctor verses it being on the computer making things a little bit easier. I remember him telling me that I had to take it easy for the next week or so until the headaches started to fade and then I could slowly bring myself back to the game. This recovery was quicker then I expected it to be, but I think it was because it hadn’t been my first rodeo with this kind of injury. I knew what strings to pull to get cleared quicker. I begged him to let me back in and so he did. That weekend I had played in a total of five games and probably had played the best weekend of soccer in a long time. I was sitting in class that following Tuesday and had this killer headache throbbing and everything. I took Advil and not even that would let it go away. That is when I knew I should probably tell my mom to take me back in, and what do you know I am out for another two weeks. After being told from the doctor that I needed a rest for a coupled of weeks, I was so irritated but I knew he was right. I looked over at my mom and decided I needed to call it quits.
