Personal Narrative: My Child With Idiopathic Scoliosis

Imagine being a 12 year old child, having a life changing surgery. When I was 4 years old my pediatrician diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis. Scoliosis is when there is an abnormal curvature of the spine. Idiopathic just means there was an unknown cause. My doctor told me that when I was a child is probably when my spine started changing. When I was an infant I never crawled, I just went straight into walking. They believe that’s what caused it, because crawling puts your natural curve in the neck and makes the spine position in the correct way. I was told not to worry about it. My pediatrician told me that I should not have any problems, and I would grow up living a normal life. Things took a turn for the worse. I woke up the next morning, and I barely could walk or move. My mom scheduled me an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon to check me out. About a week later it was time for my first visit with my doctor. I had to get an x-ray of my spine. My doctor looked over my x-rays and measured out my curve. The curve had started out at 18 degrees. I just had follow up appointments every three months, for a couple years after the car accident. It was about six to nine months after my first appointment with my orthopedic surgeon, that he noticed some major changes. Not only did I have one curve, I then had two. The primary curve had built up so immensely, that it had created a secondary curve. My top curve was then 45 degrees and the bottom curve was 37
