I’ve faced a lot of challenges in my life. One of my biggest challenges was when I was younger and on the cheer team. I’ve always had a fear of heights and falling. When I first joined the cheer team, I faced a challenge of being one of the flyers.

Before I joined the cheer team, I’d been in tumbling. I was practicing so I could try out. I had to know how to do a back handspring, walk overs, handstands, cartwheels, and many other things. When the time finally came, I had to go to the cheer clinics where they would teach us a cheer, a chant, and a dance. We learned them all in one day and practiced the other two days. When the two tryout days finally came, I was well practiced and ready. I did the cheer first, then the chant, and lastly the dance. We would find out if we made the team the next day and luckily I did make the team.

For the first few weeks, we would just practice for upcoming football games and get to know our coaches and teammates. We learned new cheers, chants, and dances. A few weeks after doing a few of those practices, we had to find out our positions. Like if you are

Everyone had there cheer uniform on and we were all ready for the game. The coach had to take role to make sure everyone was here. One of our flyers were missing so we needed to find a back up. Unfortunately there was no one to do it. The coach asked me if I wanted to do it. I was scared but there was no one else to do it so I decided I would face my fear and do it. I knew all the stunts, but my only probably was letting them put my in the air. The time had come and it was time for the stunts. We were all ready. I jumped up on there hands and I was in the air. We did a few stunts and then they dropped me and caught me. It actually worked. I didn’t fall and they caught me for every stunt. It was really fun so I finally decided to become one of the

During practice we worked in a group with the individuals and the bond that was developed helped the athletes in opening up and becoming comfortable around the coach, volunteers, and other family members. Each athlete was given a chance to call out the cheer to start and was encouraged to be loud during the duration of the cheer. Positive reinforcement was used with smiles, good vibes, and kind words which was a reflection on how the athletes performed in practice and at…

I always felt like everyone had a special talent accept me. Some could paint, act, play sports, but that was never me. I was just a little girl being bullied for having a blanket and sucking my thumb in first grade. Always left out and being told I would never amount to much, took a big toll on my grades. All throughout elementary school I was in the “special” classes.…

Cheerleading Tryouts “Come on Lauren you’ve been doing this way too long, you’ve been on the team every year since you were 14.” I said to myself as I walk through the halls of my High School. Today is May 24, the first day of the annual cheerleading try outs and for some reason I’m extremely nervous even though I’m a three year veteran. I go through my classes talking to all my other cheer friends saying how this is going to be a breeze and how we can’t wait to start the season even though my stomach is literally overwhelmed with butterflies. DING DING DING!!!…

Over the last ten years, cheerleading has not only taught me how to stunt, tumble and dance, it has also taught me so many remarkable life lessons, such as leadership, teamwork, determination, and perseverance. My swim team has an honored tradition of shaving their heads the night before the district swim meet. Districts is by far the biggest meet of the year where all swimmers attempt to break personal records and qualify for state. This shaving of the heads promises a possible time drop of maybe one tenth of a second and also builds a sense of team unity. In 2013, my freshman year of high school, I refused to partake in this sacred ritual.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…
