Personal Narrative: My Career As A Cheerleader

Improved Essays
Over my whole high school career I have committed myself to helping out in the community, whilst being an advanced student in the classroom. Although being apart of my high school and a competitive cheerleading team took of much of my time outside the classroom, my coaches, both high school teachers, and myself, never let it affect my grades. Being a cheerleader in turn made me an active member in my community. Throughout my years as a student athlete at Panther Valley High School, when I wasn't practicing, studying or participating in my local chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), I would be volunteering in my community. Whether it be volunteering at a cheer clinic for younger girls, helping make dinner for our football players

I wasn't terrible, I could hit a 90 mile per hour fastball and I could, for the most part, field a ground ball. However, I was definitely not about to be scouted by the college scouts.…

Symbolically, becoming a cheerleader means conforming; making the varsity team brings instant popularity, invitations to the best parties, and perhaps a date with the starting quarterback. To quote the movie Bring it On, "Mothers would kill to get their daughters on squads. " The word itself conjures up the stereotypical image of a ditzy blonde in a short skirt. Yet my choice to become a cheerleader was anything but a decision to kowtow to teenage conventions.…

I ran into the first time in my athletic career that raw talent and superior experience did not allow me to squeeze by as a Sophomore. In middle school and elementary school sports, all participants exert roughly the same amount of effort, so skill is generally directly correlated to the amount of time you've been playing. In high school, I made the Varsity lacrosse team on raw talent, but I never walked onto the field during meaningful situations. Naturally, I desired playing time.…
