Personal Narrative: My Brother Release

My Brothers release from PRISON.
I was 12 and my oldest brother is 22, we are ten years apart. My older brother was incarcerated for an armed robbery, and he was sentenced to 4 years in a federal penitentiary. He was seventeen when he committed the crime. So now, he is twenty-two, and I was eight when he went to prison.
So it’s January 17, 2009 at 8:43am. My whole family was getting ready to go pick up my brother “Eduardo ‘Poncho’ Jesus Saenz”. My mom woke up my sister and I, then she called my Tia Lucy and my other cousins to get ready. So in the meantime my family was getting ready I was outside playing with my dog “taco” I call him that because he looks like the dog from Taco bell. 30-40 mins later, my mom calls me and tells me “Get in the car Julito and get the spare clothes for your brother.” My mom bought him a pair of nice jeans, a nice button up shirt, a gold belt, and a pair of shoes. So my mom, sister, Tia Lucy, and my cousins (Miranda ‘Minnie’, Janiva, Bobby, Ivonne, Monica ‘Moni’, Alex, Maritza, Lucio, Clara, and Richard), are just a few people that came to pick up my brother. Everyone meets up at my Tia Lucy’s house to get organized and to see how many cars we are taking, and what we are taking like food, clothes, and drinks. So we are ready and organized, we leave around 10am and get to the prison around 11 or 11:30 am. Then again my brother doesn’t get out until 12-1 pm, so we just wait and set up stuff

I tell him hell yeah, he makes this family whole again, and without him this is a broken family. Poncho tells me never to do what he did and I never will. Everyone is home and we have a welcome home party, we invited everyone from the neighborhood and people we knew. It was around 10-11 pm and most people left the party. Poncho, Alex, Booby, and me are standing around a fire, we are just talking and I had to go to sleep but before I did I tell my brother this “I’m happy your home Poncho, don’t leave

I must say, you’ve really come quite a long way from where you started. I was a little weary of you at first. In your early adventures, I found you to be an immature boy with a heart for mischief. Maybe it wasn’t just that you liked trouble, but you always seemed to find yourself in the midst of it. If I were you I would have stayed with the widow.…

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

Joseph Campbell, the creator of the hero’s journey, did a lot of research on ancient mythology. He discovered that many heroes travel the same paths to becoming a hero. Campbell decided that heroes come across many challenges that are put into stages and in those stages the hero grows closer to the reward at the end. I am definitely not a hero, but my journey of finding Christ and giving my life to him has absolutely made me into a better person overall. As I look at my journey of finding Christ, I see that it has many similarities to Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.…
