Learning about other cultures and traveling to other nations have always been an aspiration to me. And considering that Cornell offers studying abroad possibilities, I believe I found the right college. I picture my block experience at Cornell to be filled with as much experiences as possible.

In my block experience, I want to travel abroad, of course; firstly because I love adventures, and also being that I am African, I would want to go back to my beautiful continent, Africa, to discover more of its preciousness, its people, cultures, economies and environments. I will mostly focus on politics, considering it’s one of my majors of study.

When I arrived at Brooklyn Technical High School, I experienced a major culture shock. In middle school, I was surrounded by kids who looked and spoke like me, who came from countries like the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Honduras. I could speak my strange mixture of both English and Spanish without worrying that someone wouldn’t understand me. At Brooklyn Tech, however, I study alongside students from all over the world. Now, I have friends from Bangladesh, Korea, and Poland.…

One of the reasons why I chose Cornell is to build my connections with people who are contributor, self-driven and well qualified. As said by my father in his native language and I translate, “Connections are very essential in your life son, if you want to spend time with anyone, spend it wisely. Be it on the roadside or in a coffee shop, your friends will define you and they are going to influence you in many ways.” I kept that on my mind and my future goal is also related with the connection that I’m going to make in America.…

Something outside of my intended focus of being a civil engineer is civil rights and how it ties into our communities. I want to explore ways to make a better social environment and make people of color and others be confident and secure of who they are. I want to reach out and hear the stories that are conducted throughout the communities we live in and get a better understanding on how to improve it. Looking back on these years, I feel that my most important intellectual experience was one which I only went through recently, and yet has had a profound impact on my development as an individual.…
