Personal Narrative: My Birth Story

My Birth Story
Birth stories have a lasting impact on expectant mothers. Recognizing the influence of birth stories is a key component of informal communication of knowledge about childbirth for expectant mothers. The goals of the birth story interview and discussion are to provide an opportunity to explore the sharing of a birth story as a critical way of knowing within the family and community, and also to promote understanding of the prenatal period and taking-on of the parental role. The topic of storytelling is important to nurses and families, as it allows the integration of the nurses’ experiences into their future nursing practice, which may be invaluable in facilitating authentic and meaningful connections with their patients.

It wasn’t at all what I’d expected. I didn’t know that my mom had no friends or family to share her fears, or turn to for guidance. Plus, she had to endure medical providers who were cold and insensitive. She had told me about the pain of labor many times, but I didn’t realize how alone she was, or what that must have felt like to be so young, and not have any knowledge or support. A woman in such a situation who suffers alone and remains isolated from her support system is expected to transcend all such adverse circumstances, and some do. Others don't have the emotional strengths to cope. Moreover, even when they are seemingly coping with the excessive stress, they might still be constantly producing stress hormones and toxins and some will reach the baby in the womb (Sharma, 1996). Reflecting back on the birth of my own children, I realized that my mom had been insistent on being at the hospital to support me. I remember not really wanting her to be there at the time, because my husband was there, but after she arrived, I really did appreciate that she came to be with me. I know now that she was there to be my advocate, and didn’t want me to feel alone and scared the way that she

Erdrich’s “The Years or my Birth” captivated from the first sentence. A number of emotions flicked through me by just reading the first paragraph. At the very beginning I was confused when Erdrich stated, “… and I slid out half dead” (pg.1). I assumed from that sentence and when the nurse it was too late that the fetus was dead. However, it goes on to talk about the fetus living with another family.…

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Westminster, Colorado, my parents Craig and Michelle Habben sat in Westminster Lutheran Church. Lyndsay, who was my cousin, was getting confirmed; my parents, along with the rest of my dad’s side of the family, sat and supported her. My mom Michelle had been experiencing some pain and discomfort all day, therefore, she didn’t get any sleep the night before. Once my mom noticed that she was having contractions five minutes apart, she knew for sure she was in labor with her second child.…

My father has been in the military for 30 years. His career has taken him and my family, to every corner of the world. The Air Force is a demanding career path to choose; often the spouse is left with the full weight of the chores to be done on the home front. During the course of my upbringing these duties were, in part, delegated to my sisters and I. While we never experienced “a life of almost tropical idleness’ (CITATION) like the children of Jane Smiley, we became effective and efficient members of our house hold. We learned to respect our house and our family.…

When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…

My whole life I’ve been a little different. From the clothes I wear and the way I present myself, to the way I look at the world, I’ve always been somewhat peculiar. Not peculiar in a bad way, but in an interesting, provocative kind of way. I am the weird greenish-yellow crayon in the box that no one ever uses. I was born in Anchorage, Alaska.…

Many people have different views of the experience of birthing a child. From my point of view giving birth to a child can be the most beautiful experience to a person, but it is also a painful experience. I believe so because it was the worst few hours of my life. On a Sunday morning, my stomach was hurting just a little, so as I was getting dress to go to church and I came to the realization that I had lost my mucus plug.…

The Comfort of Ignorance Much of my life has been filled with blissful ignorance about the world. Growing up, I was consumed by the little problems of my life and never thought twice about the hardships of others. However, as a self-absorbed fourteen year-old, I found that although ignorance is comfortable, it blocks the true reality of what the world is. It was a crisp, clear, and unusually warm winter day when I had to shadow my mom in the ER.…

This is not your typical birth story, as I was not surrounded by friends and relatives or even the OB-GYN that had helped me plan the birth. My boyfriend, Troy, and I had spent the previous day at the hospital because I had an awful headache. After giving me a painkiller, the nurses sent me home and advised me to come back if a headache returned. Troy and I went home, ate dinner and took a nap. I woke up and my head was pounding again, so we headed for the hospital.…
