Personal Narrative: My Big Fat Greek Weeding

What we see outside is meaningless, unless you realize what is hidden inside. I met a lot of people who had expensive clothes on and good look over all, but when I got to know them I realize how wrong I was. People pay more attention on status in society, materialistic things and what tangible you have for them, missing that personality and good heart make someone a decent person. It is impressive having a lot of money, but it is breathtaking having less and still share with others. A lot of people are being misrepresented by society based on their culture, language or race. One of the movies where people are misrepresented, especially Greeks, is My Big Fat Greek Weeding. This is the story of a Greek girl named Taula who is the member of a …show more content…
I noticed that characters represent Greeks as wild, nosy and loud. Portokalos family is a big family that shares everything, including somebody else’s business. Few time aunts, uncles and cousins gathered to discuss Taula’s future, because they thought she will spend the rest of her life alone. Finally when she found the love of her life, whole family tries to organize the wedding and be part of it. I know they had the best intentions and they only wanted to make Toula happy, but at the end everybody planned the wedding except her. Also, neighbors were aware of Greek life style, because of all noise they make every day, especially during parties they organized in their yard. One of the assumptions the movie presents is how alcohol is involved a lot in the Greeks life. Having alcohol does not make you any less than people who do not consume it if you know the limit. Using “windex” as a cure for everything is one of the funniest label ever. All of them believe, especially Kosta, if you spray windex on whatever you need to be fixed, it will help. This can be taken in the funny way, but at the same time it looks crazy, because there is no human who tries to fix things with windex, which is supposed to be used to clean glass. Labels and assumptions do not have to do anything with someone’s personality and abilities. It can only make those …show more content…
It is strictly forbidden even considering a “Xenos”, which is the name for all man who are not Greek, to get married to. That is rude and unfair, because you cannot categorize people based on their race. When Taula picked Ian as her future husband, she did not care what race he was, because love is not based on that. She knew her family would be against it, because Greeks do not consider non Greek people as good enough to be the part of the family. Her dad had a big issue with Taula being with Ian, that he invited few Greek boys to the dinner hoping it would change her mind, which was not successful. Member of the Portokalos family were quick to judge based on his race without even trying to get to know him. Kosta was not interested in meeting Ian, because he was not of them. My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a movie that shows how Greek people are proud of their past and culture. They are proud so much they believe root of every word is Greek. They are proud so much that they only have Greeks as friends and they are proud so much that they even decorated their front yard with statue of the gods. Kids are only able to go to Greek school and eat a Greek meal that has been prepared at the house. This whole movie is going back and forth trying to prove how there is no other culture that can be considered well as

According to Maria deSouza, a third-year student at Pembleton, and the President of the students for Equality Everywhere (SEE), “The societal problem is lookism. For decades, people have been willing to talk about racism and sexism, but they’re still reluctant to talk about lookism” (282). Lookism is known as being prejudice against unattractive people. Lookism is something that is not taught, it is naturally acquired and due to society, it is constantly reinforced through many sources such as social media, fashion and television. Our society has become increasingly superficial and materialistic; it is becoming less about who you are and more about what you have.…

Beauty matters. Well, at least for some. From the clothes you choose to wear (and the ones you don’t) to the items you own, everything surrounding you changes how people perceive you, even things completely out of someone’s control. Pressures to adhere to societal norms can cause long-term harm for certain people, but others can take this concept in stride. Due to different upbringings, along with different environmental influences, it allows for a range of perspectives.…

Greeks all speak a language or a lexis that they learn in the process of becoming part of their fraternity/sorority. We sometimes say things that only other Greeks will understand. In addition to the lexis that is shared, they also have different levels of seniority and the Phi, and epsilon) sigma being the beginner and epsilon being the highest seniority. I think this group values the sisterhood/ brother hood bonds that they get out of it. We as greeks love the feeling of meeting new people and being able to connect with them as close as they would with a sibling.…

Every culture throughout the world has a different perception of what beauty. Some cultures, such as the African American culture for example, express beauty by showing off wealth and expensive features. In an image captured by C.E. Gomes, there is a Swahili woman posing gracefully with several extravagant accessories, such as multiple necklaces around the neck of the woman, along with a bracelet on each of the woman’s wrists. The clothing style of the Swahili woman is very elegant, with intricate designs and patterns displayed both on the dress and on the headpiece, which completely hides her hair. (C.E. Gomes, 1900)…

The Jewish community has been following a strict set of rules since the day Moses helped them escape Egypt to the promise land. They preferred to keep themselves isolated from others, so no cultural diffusion can taint their beliefs. However, that was easier said than done, as they had to face a plethora of challenges. After Alexander the Great had conquered most of the east, from Egypt to India, the spread of Greek culture was inevitable. This came to be known as the Hellenistic period and it had many of the Rabbis in a perturbed state.…

The Greeks are, for the most part, appropriately admired. Although ancient Greek civilization has negative qualities, the advancements they contributed should not be disregarded. Many positive aspects of Greek life, including politics, art, rationalism, and scientific thought, continue to resonate throughout modern society. The negative components in Greek society were mainly issues regarding equality. There were great divides between genders and between socioeconomic classes.…

The relevance of The Hunger Games connecting with modern day society is extremely important and clearly transparent in both the book and film. For example, the main themes show the inequality between rich and poor, importance of looks, corrupt government, and watching others suffer as a means of entertainment. Like many people today, watching others fight is a common thing that people take part in. We see that the sponsors, civilians, and government officials bet on who they believe is going to win. This was recently seen in our society with the UFC fight with Ronda Rousey.…

Eve and Pandora share the role of “The First Woman.” Likewise, they are both depicted as giving in to temptation, thus bringing suffering into the world. However, these two figures have stark contrasts between one another that reveal the views of their respective cultures’ towards women, god, and the world around them. I will begin by comparing major elements of both story. In Genesis, Eve is personally created by God, and born from Adam’s rib.…

Gardening was a ‘forced’ hobby for a good portion of my childhood. Since elementary school, I worked with my dad in our back yard; I would dig holes, carry bags of manure, and plant flowers and trees. I complained that it would be easier to go to the store and buy a bag of blackberries instead of toiling in the sun for hours to achieve the same thing. I never imagined that I’d end up gardening for fun. Every year, my brother and I would collect the fruits of our labor; every year, I’d appreciate my efforts more and more.…
