Walking up to the FFA booth on course selection night in eighth grade was terrifying. There was a variety of pictures of animals and people that were wearing strange outfits. However, the one thing that truly caught my eye was the woman standing behind the table. Even though she was not smiling, I was drawn to her. As soon as I opened my mouth to introduce myself, she mentioned a public speaking contest she would like me to compete in. Overwhelmed, I did the standard smile and nod, but little did I know that that night would change everything for me.
From there on out I did everything I could to impress the legendary Bonnie Beard. Whether it was being the first person in my class to learn the FFA creed or joining every team I possibly could, there was no stone left unturned. Her constant encouragement inspired me to strive to be the best FFA member I could be. I knew from the moment I met her that I wanted to be just like her. Ms. Beard never disappoints and always has something new to teach me day in and day out. I feel like she knows just about everything! While I was not the shyest kid around, I definitely did not like the idea of going up and talking in front of several people. But if someone asked me to say a “few words” now, I would step right up with a cheesy grin on my face and talk their ear off.
