Starting from scratch was difficult because it meant spending a plethora of time at the drawing board. Our new coach did a great deal of heavy lifting, but a handful of us embraced leadership roles by giving pre-game pep talks, assaying games, researching other teams, suggesting drills, and designing plays. Assigned point guard, I was forced to overcome my insecurities and, because I knew my team was counting on me, I pushed myself to become a better player.
When we lose, it’s only natural to blame ourselves and carrying that weight around has an unmanageable impact. Therefore, we

People coming from a different planet would think every day things we do in life are weird. What we have adapted to and think are normal look very weird to others who haven’t seen people doing things like this. Such as someone who has never shaved before would think that is very odd to shave your beard. Or someone who has never seen a drive threw would think it’s weird to have people have food handed out the window. As we think other cultures are weird we have to look at the fact that our culture is weird to others People that have never seen basketball would thing it is a bunch of people running around with a ball.…

Like all children all I ever wanted was to be big and do big people things. I engaged in a few family members that I would look up to and try everything they did. I use to pretend to go grocery shopping and being a parent at times. At the age of eight, I had worn the worst pain ever and that was watching my five, year old brother getting hit by a car while trying to cross the street riding a bicycle that had a loose chain. I remember him trying to get up and get to me, but a few adults that had witnessed the accident had told him to lay down.…

That was embarrassing I love the game of basketball, even when I score in the other team’s basket. In my defense, I was only six years old and it was my first time being on a basketball team. Me and my older brother Houston were on the same team, and at the time we were losing by seven or eight points and there was hardly any time left in the game, maybe a second or two. I was always the smallest kid on the court…

It is like walking onto the stage and the lights hit you in your heavy costume. Hot. The snowflakes melt from your nose and eyelashes and you can feel cool water drip down your face. You are greeted by an aunt and uncle you haven’t seen since last Christmas and three cousin who fight over who gets the first hug. You struggle to get off your fat coat and frozen gloves, but as soon as you do you run down the stairs tripping over your feet into the basement.…

My soccer team was together for a very long time and we were all great friends. As we kept getting older we needed more girls to have enough to play and they always fit right in with us and got to know us very well. That changed this fall when the team split. None of us were happy, at least six or seven girls quit playing soccer and I was one of them. A few girls went to different clubs but the rest went to CBSC ( Council Bluffs Soccer Club) but I didn’t because I’m not a big fan of soccer anymore. After getting hurt all the times I did in soccer I realized that it's not worth it if you’re going to be out for a third of the season and if your injury makes you miss out on other sports.…

First Place in Basketball I woke up at 5:00am in the morning to take a warm shower. Usually I take fifty thousand years in the shower, but this time I think I stayed for about 40 minutes. After changing and eating breakfast, the sun was still sleeping, but I didn’t care and I left the house. The stars were still shining in the dark blue sky. I took a motorbike to school and it was so fast I felt like the driver broke the speed of sound.…

Our basketball team hadn’t won a championship game since 1992. It was my senior year and my last shot at redemption against the defending champs. The whole season we only lost one game, we were projected to lose, and we were the underdogs. We had one week left to prepare for what was the largest game of my high school career. Monday’s practice was the worst of the week, we only ran and shot free throws.…
