Personal Narrative: My Basketball Experience

Improved Essays
Basketball has always been an important part of my life. I started playing in second grade and never stopped till my sophomore year of high school. Since I was on a club team, The Lady Future Rams, since fifth grade, I couldn’t wait to start playing ball in high school. Finally freshman year had started. I could barely contain my excitement for basketball to begin. Basketball season had arrived, and if we only knew the torture that was coming toward us.
Practice was all about conditioning, we didn’t touch a basketball for the first two weeks of practice. Our coach Chris Singletary would blow his whistle and we would start stretching. He would then yell, “Get on the baseline!” The team dreaded hearing that, we knew that, that meant running. We would do things such as, running ladders (a 8,6,4,2 and a 5,3,1: that was how many times we had to run down the court), foot fire, back peddling and so on. By the time practices were over, we could hardly walk.

Our first game was going great, I played the entire game; scoring points, telling people where to go, and things a captain should do. Until the fourth quarter, the team fell apart. We went to being 20 points ahead to losing by 20 points. We hung our heads walking back to the locker room. The coaches were disappointed;
Coach Singletary yelled, “You better rest tonight, practice is going to be hell tomorrow.” The bus ride home was silent, however I made my way to the front of the bus to sit next to the coaches. I wanted to know what area I needed to improve on. Coach Singletary whispered, “Nothing you did great, we just need to work on plays to get you to score more.” I said back ,” Thanks, but I’m really not looking forward to practice

    In August of 1992, Rake’s team had a Sunday morning practice of all conditioning after a bad scrimmage the day before. Two miles was their “warm-up.” Then, the team ran bleachers, a workout dreaded by all Spartans. It was so dreaded that “when Rake yelled Bleachers, half the team wanted to quit” (Grisham 75). During the workout, sophomore Scotty Reardon collapsed on the bleachers “and never regained consciousness” (Grisham 76).…

    People coming from a different planet would think every day things we do in life are weird. What we have adapted to and think are normal look very weird to others who haven’t seen people doing things like this. Such as someone who has never shaved before would think that is very odd to shave your beard. Or someone who has never seen a drive threw would think it’s weird to have people have food handed out the window. As we think other cultures are weird we have to look at the fact that our culture is weird to others People that have never seen basketball would thing it is a bunch of people running around with a ball.…

    Like all children all I ever wanted was to be big and do big people things. I engaged in a few family members that I would look up to and try everything they did. I use to pretend to go grocery shopping and being a parent at times. At the age of eight, I had worn the worst pain ever and that was watching my five, year old brother getting hit by a car while trying to cross the street riding a bicycle that had a loose chain. I remember him trying to get up and get to me, but a few adults that had witnessed the accident had told him to lay down.…

    Basketball has been a part of my life as I have played it since I could remember. I was in the school’s team year after year and was even drafted for the team as high school came. All hopes and expectations of playing in the high school team were shattered.…

    "Hey Ed, do you think the school would sponsor our softball team?" "Let me get back with you." A few days later a note arrived in my school mailbox from Ed Carey, the Dean of Students at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, stating my request had been approved and to go to the business office to pick up my check. I walked upstairs to the business office, informed the administrator I was there to pick up the check, which he had waiting on his desk.…

    Our basketball team hadn’t won a championship game since 1992. It was my senior year and my last shot at redemption against the defending champs. The whole season we only lost one game, we were projected to lose, and we were the underdogs. We had one week left to prepare for what was the largest game of my high school career. Monday’s practice was the worst of the week, we only ran and shot free throws.…

    So we prayed and the game started and we played nervously. My captain, Melissa dribbled down the court, looked to pass, and took the shot but missed it. Michelle also missed her fast-break lay up, and I missed my free throw. At the end of Quarter 2, it was like playing football because the scoreboard only shows 2 for Ipeka Tomang (my school) and 3 for Yadika. That indicates how much we are struggling the whole quarter never really score but a constant battle between getting and loosing the ball.…
