Personal Narrative: My Anesthesiologist

“Everything happens for a reason.” That’s what my mom was trying to tell me as I was lying in a hospital bed having a panic attack. I would be getting a procedure on my hip a few minutes later. Unable to listen to her over the fear that might die. This was my first time getting surgery and going under anesthesia. The anesthesiologist made his way over to my bed now blanketed in tissues and said “Hi, I will be your anesthesiologist for today. So do you have any questions?” All I was able to say with the little breath I had “I’m really nervous”. The tears streamed down my face the moment those words left my body. The more I said them the more real it felt. “I would be too.” he uttered. My mom holding my now sweat filled hand gave him daggers. Granted he was trying to make me feel better, hearing that the guy who would be putting me under would be nervous in my situation too wasn’t the best thing for me. The nurses tried to calm me down and eventually gave me a sedative. I went into the operating room and that’s all I remember. …show more content…
Obviously I had a new hip but a new perspective. Before, I was always a shy person. I never wanted to put myself out there or venture into the world. Home was a safe place for me and I was just fine with that. I’ve always been like that from a 8 month old baby to a year ago. As an infant I never wanted to leave my mother’s side or be in the presence of anyone else. On the first day of kindergarten I cried the whole day because I would be on my own for hours. Fast forward to freshman year, I was having a lot of issues with stress and panic attacks. I was later on diagnosed with anxiety. As I was growing older I had to become more independent but I found it hard to even communicate with strangers, whether it was ordering a meal or talking to someone on the

I remember meeting Mr. Stanley his first semester at Ohio State. He wandered in to Denny Hall lost, looking for his English class, so I gave him directions. We had a conversation during the walk through Denny and he told me he was in the Army. I immediately asked him what brought you to Ohio State after 12 years and his response wanted to go to college to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. His reasoning was very interesting to me because, he received back surgery that was the wrong type of operation, so he wanted to ensure this doesn’t happen to other patients by becoming a surgeon himself.…

They call them “Tap-taps,” the brightly painted open back trucks that transport passengers through the dusty streets of Haiti. A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. I noticed the adult sitting uncomfortably, a towel wrapping his foot, as his eyes scanned around the room.…

My feelings of excitement quickly changed to scared. I knew I wasn’t in danger, but I realized how important this opportunity was for me. My Ob clinical rotation at PSL was an educational and overall a great opportunity. Throughout the 4 days I was at this facility I had opportunities to work with a few patients with different pregnancy complications. One patient I cared for and performed various nursing skills on had HTN superimposed preeclampsia. This experience compared to other experiences has taught me how important it is to be a critical thinker while caring for patients. So many other complications can occur with preeclampsia, putting mom and baby at risk for injury, so this was a very challenging patient and preventing complications or harm was most important.…

My doctor told me that this surgery would finally explain why, at the age of eighteen, I still had not had my period. I needed to know why. Still, I felt as if I carried myself to my own casket as I climbed up onto the operating table and laid my head on its cold, hard surface. The anesthesiologist put the plastic mask over my mouth. I breathed in deeply.…

“Hey, there how are you feeling,” Said the doctor as I was waking up after the first of my 3 surgeries. If it wasn't for the anesthesia I would have said “It felt like I have been hit by 3 trains” but instead of saying that I nodded. With the little amount of energy I had I squeezed my mom's hand to reassure her that I was ok. The next few days where a blur of waking in and out of consciousness. What I do remember is how much it hurt to move in bed.…

Many aspects of myself have changed since those third grade mornings when my entire class fueled their hobbies by researching sports or bugs on the computer program ReadAbout:™ while I continuously searched for articles on brain surgery or the latest medical technology. Since then, I have crafted a spot-on Miranda Sings impression, become a vegetarian, and learned that sports will never be my strong suit as I scored for the opposing team in basketball more than once. Throughout my seventeen years of life, however, one piece of me has remained unchanged. I am not sure where my passion for the medical field stemmed from as my parents are not doctors and going in for a checkup was scarier for my nine year old self than belting out my rendition…

Personal experiences with medicine can change drastically depending on the perspective of viewing. As a healthcare professional it is pertinent that one is able to put themselves in the patient's shoes and develop a sense of empathy. A personal experience that I have had, and am having, concerns my father, and end-stage renal disease. My father received a kidney transplant in the late 1980’s due to end-stage renal disease. The transplant operation was successful and his kidney function was stable for decades with the support of anti-rejection medications, and the watch of a nephrologist.…
