I am the only member of my family born in the United States. My parents, brother, and sister immigrated after the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, where thousands were murdered as India descended into nationalistic bloodshed. I grew up in a comfortable home, received a stellar education, worked at the White House, and even played drums for a full house at Lincoln Center. This is the storybook American Dream. And I am, in many ways, a cliché American. I’m a kid from Buffalo who loves chicken wings; a New Yorker who loves the Yankees; and don’t even get me started on Beyoncé. Like thousands of other Americans, I also happen to sport a beard and a turban. My

I must do my best to preempt it. In collaboration with the Department of Justice, I founded Project Identity, a mentorship program for young adults on probation in Harlem. With a diverse group of students from Columbia University, we cook and share meals, volunteer together, and discuss our future aspirations. We have received thousands of dollars in funding and over 25 young adults have participated; yet, the most rewarding aspect of founding Project Identity is seeing the transformation in the individuals we serve. We help people like Latisha, a young, talented girl left jobless because of her criminal record who dreams of owning a small business. With her mentor’s guidance, Latisha is now preparing for the GRE. I could not be more

What makes an American, ‘American’? The answer to this question will vary greatly depending on the respondent’s beliefs and cultural background. As the United States continues to grow and evolve in areas such as race, ethnicity and culture, the image of America changes as well. In an article entitled ‘Nation or Notion’ by Patrick J. Buchanan, he argues that Americans need a common identity based upon ancestry and culture to survive as a country. On the other hand, an article entitled ‘What Does It Mean to Be an “American”?’ by Michael Walzer argues that America does not need a common identity.…

As the title gives it away, the author analyzes and compares different time periods and situations to understand what exactly is the American Dream, whether it exists or not, and if it does, is it possible to achieve it? In order to answer this obscure question, King strategically builds his claims around connections and trends in order to help support his findings, as well as provide well-defined transitions to organize his thoughts and drive his point home.…

It was my first time in America. In 2015, I moved with my family permanently from India. Had few issues moving but managed to solve those issues without any difficulties. I had no clue how it would be; I had heard about it, read it in the newspaper and saw it in movies but never seen it with my eyes. I was pumped to know about how each and everything used to function, how different the American system is from the Indian system?…

The famous “Star Spangled Banner” viewed America as the “land of the free”, a place of grand expectations where the most impressive dreams could be achieved. However, not everyone can achieve their dreams, no matter how hard they work for it. Today, many believe that success is defined by how many iPhones you own and likes you get on an Instagram post, rather than how many good memories you share with friends and family. Even holidays as simple as Christmas, birthdays, and Thanksgiving have been corrupted by the modern, faulty version of the American Dream and have lost their original meanings. Geela’s “What is the American Dream?” exposes the true meaning of the American Dream, saying that monetary values and materialistic items will not matter…

Little bit of Yankee, little bit of Ya’ll. Maybe a catchy t-shirt slogan, but not necessarily untrue. Having lived half my life in both New England and the South, I often feel like a combination of my two home experiences. This can be a little unsettling: up North, I’ve “turned Southern”, but down South, I’m definitely a Northerner. Though sometimes difficult, I’ve grown to like the alternate viewpoints I’ve gained living in different locations.…
