Little bit of Yankee, little bit of Ya’ll. Maybe a catchy t-shirt slogan, but not necessarily untrue. Having lived half my life in both New England and the South, I often feel like a combination of my two home experiences. This can be a little unsettling: up North, I’ve “turned Southern”, but down South, I’m definitely a Northerner. Though sometimes difficult, I’ve grown to like the alternate viewpoints I’ve gained living in different locations.…

Growing up only knowing the idea of the apple-pie life as a distant thing, I have been told to pursue the American dream, to relentlessly chase my goals all throughout my life; make something of myself as others have not with only an inkling of a concept. As if I was supposed to naturally observe and absorb it from everything that had and would surround me. In seventh grade during a discussion, asking even what the American dream was earned quiet gasps and horrified stares from those who now saw me as something less. Stuttering yet indignant, those surrounding me were trying fruitlessly to explain to me a concept only instilled with me as idealization and never anything concrete. Even after the discussion moved on, a sour taste in my mouth…

I remember it like it was yesterday seeing my mom sitting in the living room on the cut up, scratched red brownish sofa…

Although the crisp April air gnawed incessantly at my exposed fingers and nose, I felt warm and blissful as I looked over Amsterdam Avenue from my perch upon Revson Plaza. Though the rest of my tour group was continuing to the next spot of interest, for several moments I took in my surroundings and fantasized a future walking the campus as a student, rather than a visitor. And, as I fantasized, the discordant city suddenly found rhythm and my heart was longingly beating along. I had come to tour Columbia because, due to growing up with the inevitable restraints of a town of one thousand people, over time I had steadily developed a self-inspiring dream of truly understanding the philosophical workings and interrelations of our often enigmatic…

However, I did not receive a response. In my last semester of senior year at Ramapo College of New Jersey I read a book entitled, “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrnes, and I realized that one could have any life they want if they just believe in it. I gave up on my dreams a long time ago because I got discouraged. After telling my family and friends about my ideas, they said that I am just a “dreamer” and I should start thinking more “realistically”.…
