Personal Narrative: My American Culture

I remember on the 4th of July, my dad got a bit drunk and accidentally lit a firecracker in his face. I've never been there, but I’m almost positive that never happens in China. If someone told me about a month ago to define my culture in detail I wouldn't know what to tell them. Now that I know more on the subject I can answer, my culture is American culture but not completely the American culture. I have come to notice that the American culture is very diverse and different than some may think, for instance, if you live on the west coast of America your life and daily routine will be exponentially different than someone from the east coast. The same rules apply for the north and the south areas if not more. Another example, Japanese …show more content…
Though I do like fast food, superhero movies, and I am very patriotic. I'm not only American, I am also Catholic. I celebrate Christmas and Easter and go to church on Sundays. Also my family has its own little culture, or tradition, on Christmas eve we all open one gift just for fun. Also, my family has a Christmas celebration on my mom’s side, we eat food and participate in a white elephant gift exchange. Easter is always celebrated at church or my house since I have been a Catholic my whole life, we usually participate in the church picnic and go to reconciliation. Also on Easter each year when we get home from church and or the picnic my family will have an Easter egg hunt around the house for me and my step sister Katie to enjoy, they also hide easter baskets. We also make it a very big tradition to always go on one family trip in the summer, I hate flying in planes, but I always have fun on the trips plane or no plane. I guess you could say that culture is the way you live your life, it's your repetitive movement during the day or the way you celebrate special occasions. For example, I eat breakfast every morning, or I try to, but maybe there are a couple cultures that don’t allow breakfast in the morning. Also I am a Catholic so I celebrate Christmas, but if an American family is Jewish they don't celebrate Christmas they celebrate Hanukkah, they both get gifts, but it's for a different situation. Also, because I live in Seattle I will be wearing warmer, more comfortable clothes then someone who lives in Arizona due to temperature. The American culture is more complex than some may

I had a wonderful time doing my book report on “American Cultural Patterns: A cross-cultural Perspective”. The book is about observing American culture from an outsider's perspective, and comparing it to other cultures from across the globe. In this book, American culture refers to pattern and behavior of the mainstream. In this book, American culture mainly refers to white males for they make up the majority of America, however, it is not exclusive to them. This book is not about Americans changing the way of think when interactions with foreigners, but instead to learn and see their own patterns.…

Culture is, “the entire way of life of a group of people” (Ferris, Stein, 2014: 77). A sociologist would see this as the large distinction between people and what makes them diverse. The custom’s that people celebrate, their holidays. If someone from the United States was to move to another country, it could shock them with how different some cultures do things compared to the United States. Having a large and vast diversity must include people who have a different culture than you.…

Little bit of Yankee, little bit of Ya’ll. Maybe a catchy t-shirt slogan, but not necessarily untrue. Having lived half my life in both New England and the South, I often feel like a combination of my two home experiences. This can be a little unsettling: up North, I’ve “turned Southern”, but down South, I’m definitely a Northerner. Though sometimes difficult, I’ve grown to like the alternate viewpoints I’ve gained living in different locations.…

To be an American is to be able to choose freely. Acts of terror seem to be more and more common, according to the media. In times of terror and strife the citizens of the United States of America come together no matter what beliefs and opinions we have to defeat the opposition. For my ethnographic research paper I examined the culture of my roommate who is from and grew up in California. The United States is a country that is just one large melting pot for different cultures and ethnicities. It is a relatively young country compared to Europe and Asian countries but the US pulls from such a wide range of countries which brings different cultures to one large nation. I looked at what culture is like in California. With the east coast facing Europe and the west coast facing Asia it makes for subcultures to pop up around the United States.…

I believe many would be hard pressed to come up with a word that speaks to the culture of the United States in totality. Being the “melting pot” of the world, America has many customs and traditions that have been borrowed, and also taken, from a variety of regions in the world (Zimmerman, 2015, para 1). From those various sources a set of values and beliefs have been crafted that generally define modern American culture. References to the values held in our society can be heard in conversations, seen in our mannerisms, and witnessed in the presence of common material staples that litter our bodies and streets.…
