Personal Narrative: My Aha From Real Stories

How to build relationships beyond a heart felt thank you. My Aha from real stories.

What could a grandmother –granddaughter bond, an office Christmas party and an interaction with a barista have in common that can create ahas? If that intrigues you, you may enjoy the read. A graph at the end, for those of you who love snapshots.

I was on skype with my mother in India. Just like many grandparents, my mother was interested in things that really matter in life. She asked about my daughter’s schooling. I was parroting what my 7 year old daughter’s teacher had shared. As it related to my daughter, I glanced her way. She was a few feet away doing her own thing. I looked at my daughter fleetingly, her face grabbed my attention- every inch

That aha brought a smile to my face. I framed it as steps, in picture below.

Still, my daughter story did not fit in. My daughter was moved by facts shared with her grandmother – who was not a boss equivalent. As I thought about what her grandmother means to her, a bigger smile dawned on my face. Something at office Christmas party that was tucked in my memory came flooding back.

As cars drove in to the Office Christmas party, I saw one recurring theme. As the valet opened the car door for employee‘s spouse and welcomed him/her like a royal – it brought a million dollar smile on every employees face. Even usually serious folks had a perceptible smile. In that small swoop of act, many unspoken positive things were shared with the spouses about the employees!

Just like employees at the Christmas party, my daughter was thrilled that someone who mattered to her heard about her progress. I had inadvertently acted like the valet who opened the door. With my biggest aha, I attempted to

They come in different names – teachers, coaches, parents, grandparents, well-wishers, spouses, children, mentors, role models, true givers and many more. I am going to call them collectively your guardian angels.

Takeaway: Vision for future…

My biggest aha - in my earnestness to crack the code for my daughter’s unbridled joy, I may have stumbled upon something profound, subtle, simple and powerful.

Best explained with an example. You want to share a heart-felt thank you with a colleague Joanna. You share a note with a mentor who gave Joanna her first break many moons ago. Somebody you have heard her rave about with gratitude, her guardian angel:

“I know that you mean a lot to Joanna. Here is what Joanna did for me (specifics). My heart felt thanks for her efforts. Thought you should know. “

Think about the positive ramifications. Sharing genuine thank you directly with someone is great, sharing it with bosses is a higher step, but sharing it with their guardian angel brings unbelievable propulsion to human connections. See picture below.

We talk about driving change that matters for the future (#2030NOW, #action2015). Can human connectivity be the bedrock for future? I believe

    The Psalter Analysis

The Psalter is a book of Holy Scripture that has been both captivating and profitable in my personal journey of faith. Unfortunately they never became much more than a guide for Godly living, comforting words for those in torment or grief as well as songs and poetry that were slightly more anointed than modern hymns and contemporary worship songs. This study of the Psalms has been beneficial as it re-enforced and greatly deepened my understanding of discipleship in the Psalms. It also gave me new appreciation for the beautiful literary style, the Christocentric nature in which they were written as well as the role they played in cultic and liturgical functions and in personal piety. The most beneficial shift in my interpreting and reading…

With what little wisdom and perspective I have at twenty-one years of age, one thing about which I am certain is the harshness and deep-felt pain of the hole left behind when a loved one dies. If I know nothing else to be true, it is the ache and sometimes-unbearable sadness my family and I are experiencing at the loss of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. But just as much as that sorrow is real, so, too, is the welcome relief of laughter and love we exchange as we remember the wonderful, funny life of our very dear Patty. It is only with fond remembrance and a good laugh that we are able to keep our heads when dealing with the grief of losing my Grandma, and she has given us an abundance of anecdotes and stories with which we can chuckle and attempt to patch the huge hole that settled in our hearts.…

“In a word, I was too cowardly to do what I knew to be right, as I had been too cowardly to avoid doing what I knew to be wrong.” ― Charles Dickens Recently, Chelsea Manning, the former Army sergeant heroic and whistleblower, was released from the confines of her military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Chelsea is free, not because Barrack Obama is a swell and compassionate guy or because the U.S. military is interested in justice -- Chelsea is free because of the thousands of organizers and activists who dedicated the last four years of their lives to the cause. Turns out, even minor victories require dedication and hard work.…

The Comfort of Ignorance Much of my life has been filled with blissful ignorance about the world. Growing up, I was consumed by the little problems of my life and never thought twice about the hardships of others. However, as a self-absorbed fourteen year-old, I found that although ignorance is comfortable, it blocks the true reality of what the world is. It was a crisp, clear, and unusually warm winter day when I had to shadow my mom in the ER.…

Taking a couple of seconds of your day to speak to someone can make an enormous difference in their day. Everyday there are people that go through feeling incredibly alone with no one to speak to because no one acknowledges them. Acknowledgment is immensely important in life because without it you’ll feel alone in the world and feel as if no one cares. According to Michael Hyde, acknowledgement is “a communicative behavior that grants attention to others and thereby makes room for them in our lives.” Many moments in my life I have felt as if I have been acknowledged, but many moments I have not.…
