Personal Narrative: My Accomplishments

“It’s never too late to be what you might have been” (George Eliot). I am not the average applicant because my achievements are diverse in comparison to others. My noteworthy accomplishment is overcoming an obstacle that I have faced for several years, understanding my identity and not chasing acceptance. These obstacles held me hostage from exuding my fullest potential, but as they have been resolved, my future is boundless. The educational environment has drilled into students that they are less likely to succeed if they do not obtain astounding GPA’s, soaring test scores, and become ambitious Samaritans who have completed years of community service. My diversity and determination will fracture the image of the “perfect” student, as I am proficient in multiple areas. For example, my guidance counselor in Chicago nominated me to attend the National Student Leadership Conference, because he saw potential in me to accomplish tremendous tasks. In high school, there is a caste system created to divide students’ academic achievements; there are AP, honors, regular, and below average courses, that one is classified. …show more content…
Various teachers told my parents that I had the potential to have an A in their class; but, when someone does not believe it, they do not achieve it. I was ashamed to go to tutoring, because I felt inadequate and unqualified in the higher-level classes. My GPA looks like David in comparison to all of the Goliath's in my senior class. As I went into my senior year, my counselors told me, the best chance I have is at an in-state college, and I almost believed them. After high school, most students attend college in order to become qualified for a successful future career. In today’s society, attending a top-rated university or Ivy League institution is seen as the ticket for embarking on such a path. Yet because these programs are so competitive, the application process has become unnecessarily devastating, involving extensive test prep, unending academic pressure, exhaustive hours of extracurricular activities that may or may not earn a student an impressive mark of distinction, and emotionally draining interviews, campus visits, and networking events. The message revolving around college admissions is even worse than the agony of the application process itself—a message that a student’s worth and value…

A weakness that I have is that I do not know how to say no to individuals that ask me for help since I love to help people. It is important that I learn to say no when helping others gets in the way of me accomplishing my tasks. It is important that I do both, but not when I run the risk of not meeting my deadlines and me staying late hours after work to get my work done. It has not been an easy task saying no, but I am learning to be okay with saying no because it is important that it does not interfere with my responsibilities.…

There are several experiences in my life where I have felt that I was treated in an unfair manner, but the most recent of those experiences is the one that occurred to me only months prior to this application. Up until the beginning of November of this year, I used to believe that being a great and successful student would be the most rewarding accomplishment of my senior high career. As a result of this, I unwisely assumed that the most important thing in my life was how well I could do on the next test. I spent a meager amount of my time involved in anything else aside from my homework or studying; expecting to be fairly remunerated for a majority of my hard work. Earlier this year, I was indeed rewarded with an application to National Honors…

Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…

While reading the essay “I Just Want to be Average,” by Mike Rose, I noticed how his schooling experience was opposite of mine, there were few similarities between the education aspects and drastic differences. It’s not fair how the public education system works to prophet those students who have already been deemed successful before becoming an adult. Looking back, I can see how I was treated; being outgoing, energetic, academically inclined and lettered in four sports. I was passed along, seen to be successful in my educator’s eyes, I was “going somewhere,” despite coming from a poverty-stricken household. I utilized school as my escape from my home life, in specific sports.…
