Personal Narrative: My Ability To Work With People From Different Cultures

Decent Essays
In modern times the world is more diverse and as a result, we are required to work with people that may be a little different from us. This is especially true for myself as I live in Houston, Texas one of the most diverse cities in the world. This has provided me the opportunity to work with people who come from different background and cultures. One instance of this would be when I had to do a project with my classmates who all hailed from different cultures. One time last year my teacher assigned me to do a project with a group. The group I got assigned to happened to have people who came from different cultures. For instance, one of was from Bangladesh, one was from India, and one was Caucasian. All of these people had different cultures than that of mine as I am Hispanic. Once we started talking and trying to figure out how to do the project we all tried to do our best to get along. One of them suggested we go over to his house to do the project. At first I was intimidated because I was not used to going over to people’s houses that are from different cultures. I was scared that might do something to offend his family or something. When I first showed up to his house I was not fully confident of what was going to happen. I was scared of going in and meeting his parents as I had never been over to someone else’s house much …show more content…
Although we all had different cultures, we all had similar thoughts and goals. I realized that we all had similar lives. For one we went to the same school and had to deal with the same people. Even outside of school, we had similar lives. We were all very busy with things such as homework, work, and other extracurricular activities. Also we each had a family that functioned in a similar in fashion. As we did the project I found out that our different backgrounds were also helpful as we were able to come up with different solutions for many different

The assignment says to get to know people of cultures other than my own. Ok cool. Growing up in California allowed me to grow up around a rainbow of people and my work for the City of Phoenix has turned that rainbow into the proverbial “double rainbow.” My favorite uncle is Mexican, his children, my cousins are mixed race; at work I have and still work with several African-Americans, as well as Hispanic-Americans, even Asian-Americans. I call them all my friends and when looking for someone to interview I saw them as just Americans, people of the same culture as I am.…

There are several co-cultures to which one can belong. The co-cultures that I relate to are female, African American, middle-class, a border between generation X and the new millennial. I am a 34 year old mother of two boys and I am not a stay at home mom. I relate to most young mothers here in American when it comes to being a young black women who are raising African American males.…

Clarence, I agree with you completely that older generations follow the motto “a hard day’s work for an honest day’s pay”. I work with a few older employees and they work 5x harder than some of the younger employees I work with. I also received a 35 on my EI test which I was not surprised of either. I have a very high work ethic and have very little time for play in my job. I do need to learn to put myself in others shoes; sometimes this is very hard for me to do.…

I believe that I will be comfortable working with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. I will have a certain level of flexibility in functioning with different group of people. This is because my most of the profile dimensions are in the middle of the extreme ends. This means that I can easily adjust in any kind of environment. On comparing my Cultural Profile with my home country's plot, I found that there is a very close relation between them.…

When one thinks of Iowa, one does not necessarily think of cultural diversity. The more and more I think about it as I have matured, it was exceedingly challenging to grow up as an Asian in my community. That is because I sometimes had trouble understanding the culture of others and my own culture at my young age. When I was younger, I found it very challenging to understand many of the things my peers and teachers were saying figuratively. For example, I had difficulty understanding jokes, so I took them literally and did not know they were joking.…

The life style in Ecuador was harsh and unpleasing but in the states life was so much more pleasurable with all the opportunities that are given me. The only problem is that people where closed minded.…

When I was 9-10 years old I lived with my mom, dad, and sister in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania. Lake Ariel was a small town where all you would see is corn, fields, and woods. We had lived in this house for two years and I had a good group of friends that I had met from school or extracurricular activities. I attended Western Wayne Hamlin elementary school and was in fourth grade. The school district was huge, covering six townships, but my school was small.…

A weakness that I have is that I do not know how to say no to individuals that ask me for help since I love to help people. It is important that I learn to say no when helping others gets in the way of me accomplishing my tasks. It is important that I do both, but not when I run the risk of not meeting my deadlines and me staying late hours after work to get my work done. It has not been an easy task saying no, but I am learning to be okay with saying no because it is important that it does not interfere with my responsibilities.…

The great opportunity that I have with my subject is that I get to teach them about the Latino culture and 98% of my students are Latinos. I feel this is a great opportunity to teach my students to feel proud of their Latino culture and the great advantages they have by being bicultural. For those students who are not Latino, I teach them to appreciate other cultures and to feel conformable around their peers. Besides, I always ask them to share something about their culture and compare it to the Latino culture. Many times they come to discover that both cultures share a lot in common.…

In today’s time, most people fail to realize that everyone is not from the same place. We all have different backgrounds that influence the way that we talk, think, and live. I was raised in a rural town in the Mississippi delta called Ruleville. Most people would consider it as the country because it is an extremely small town sounded by open fields. Most of the fields are used for farming and some of the others are just private land.…

In England, when you reach 10th grade you participate in a nationally accepted program called 'Work Experience'. After 2 weeks of tireless searching I landed a job at Ariya Capital; an experienced developer and investor in clean energy and infrastructure projects throughout sub-Saharan Africa. It was actually much more advanced than any job I ever thought of getting.…

In the area I live in, there is a mix of many different cultures. I’ve lived in the same area for almost 14 years and I've seen different culture groups grow and others slowly decrease. The language the was usually heard when I first moved in has also changed throughout the years and has had an impact on the type of people I now interact with on the daily basis. With the different cultures growing and moving into the neighborhood I live in I have begun to see a change in the type of local shops, clothing, and food. Even at the local schools, I can see the changes in culture and how schools try to have better interactions with the children.…
