Personal Narrative: My AAA Hockey Team

Improved Essays
Imagine a rocket, specifically molded, perfectly symmetrical, prepared to do it’s job exactly how it needs to with no room for error. Seems almost perfect, on the other hand we have the Rockets, my AAA hockey team the summer before sixth grade. It was made up of players from the La Crosse area who played and practiced together every summer for the last few years. We weren’t exactly the most organized team in the sense of having professional attitudes. The ceiling at our practice arena had leaks and water would pour out if it was hit with anything. Naturally, we would skate around and throw pucks at it where our teammates were standing and watch them get water dumped all over them. Summer was winding down and we had our last tournament in Duluth, …show more content…
We were leaving the house and, of course, running behind. I forgot to pack my gear, didn’t wake up in time to eat breakfast, and was tired. When my family had finally gotten into the car it was an hour after we had originally planned to leave. After about an hour and a half of driving, we stopped at McDonalds for lunch and then again at a gas station so that we could all use the restroom. The original plan was to go check in at the hotel before going to the game, but that just was not possible anymore. As we drove closer and closer to Duluth the team we were playing that day was the talking point in the car. The Omaha Tropics were who we were facing first of four possible games in the tournament. They were the heavy favorite to win with the reason being because they used this tournament as a tryout team for their winter team. That meant they brought a hefty amount of very skilled players to this tournament all giving one-hundred percent effort skating for a spot on their winter team in Omaha. Not to mention, their team is mostly the same players every year, so in reality seventy-five percent of these kids played together all year long. Needless to say, when I arrived at the rink I went to the locker room to find the rest of my team just as nervous as I

Fear not your best friend fear Eagerly waiting for the sound of the final bell ending the game, I limped back to the locker room ashamed of failing my teammates once again. With my jersey drooping below my knees, I dreaded every second of ice time starring at a swarming pool of merciless giants. Receiving the puck gave you the opportunity to score, but for me it meant running into a wall. Running into other players sent me flying through the air before gasping for air and landing dazed on the verge of unconsciousness. The condemnation of failing to contribute to my team or participating in the physical aspect of hockey reminded me I was in a dark world of self-loathing because I couldn't accept this fact.…

I’ve been playing the incredible sport of Ice Hockey for over 10 years now. Although it has become steadily easier, and more about sharpening skills than developing them, in the beginning it was extremely difficult. The progress I have made since when I first began playing is immeasurable. I have come as far as I have in hockey through all the years of support from my father, because he’s always been happy to watch me play competitively.…

One situation where I found myself in a fixed mindset was when I was a freshman at Mountain Pointe high school trying to make the baseball team. At the time, I had a half-hearted passion for baseball that made me want to be on the school baseball team, but I felt that everything would come natural to me because I was Dominican. I was quite proud of how Dominicans were typically great at baseball quite naturally it seemed. However, with this knowledge I became highly critical about everything I did when playing baseball at the high school camps before the baseball tryouts. I did not focus on overall improvement as I tried to ensure that every throw, batting, and pitch was perfect.…

The Bashers had not lost a tournament game in two years, and were skilled, fast and tough. Before the game, the Canadian and French national anthems were played. Followed by roughly six priests and a bishop going to centre ice to bless a box of pucks and shake holy water in each goal crease (Kinsella 155-156). Shortly after the puck was dropped, and the Bashers gained possession and shot directly at the Wagonburners goalie, Ferd Tailfeathers.…
