How Donald Trump’s message shaped my high school career and my life.
I was two months away from graduating high school, my future seemed clear I knew where I was going to be in college next year, I knew what I wanted to study and it felt like everything was moving smoothly. Every day brought more shared laughs over memories from freshman year and more promises that we would continue to stay in touch especially in such a digitally active world. But then my life changed over one email.
As I walked into history class I decided to check my email, in my inbox I found an email calling for my help. Attached were screenshots of Facebook posts by a Board of Education Member in my High School saying that “Muslims …show more content…
So it seemed forever but there were only 2 weeks left until the next board meeting and I get a call from an executive director at a civil rights organization saying that issued a press release on the matter. Minutes later I get an email from a reporter on Reuters, then the next day I am giving interviews to the 5’o clock news. A petition had been started with over 650 signatures by this time, my call for her resignation was echoed by the state senator and three assembly representatives in my district. The board member continuously said that no way she was resgining and I decided to play my ace card. Three days before the next board meeting I said that the students and I were planning a walkout during second period as a sign of protest for the board member. Within 12 hours of announcing the walkout, the principal called me to his office and confirmed that the board of education member had resigned. A feeling of accomplishment and pride overtook my
