Improved Essays
Through the years, I have moved to almost 3 culturally different countries, my experiences have been nothing less of hectic. From changing to country to country to school to school. I have be-friended people from all around the world and have managed to gather a few bits and pieces from each of their cultures. It is so fascinating finding out about traditions around the world.

To strive in a multi-cultural atmosphere would obviously be tough, but I have thankfully done it more than once. I was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1996 although, I grew up in Virginia, USA since my parents moved there when I was 2 and I was raised in one of the most diverse places in the world. When we come to visit in my home country in the summers I would be often

I've always loved different cultures and tried to surround myself in as many as possible however I could. This was usually me trying to learn on my own from the internet, music and movies, but I was still missing that X factor that really made me indulge in other cultures. As soon as I walked onto Swarthmore's campus I felt that X factor. Sitting in the info session and taking the tour, I truly felt at home. The small diverse campus allows for people of completely different backgrounds and cultures to have real relationships that they might not have even noticed anywhere else in the world.…

Before I emigrated from China to America, I was in the care of my mother while my father was in America, establishing a home for us. My time in China was very vague but I remember a specific event, which made me realize that in China, respect and manners were very important, more so than America to what I have noticed. I can still recall vividly the time how my uncle disciplined me. It was my fault, really.…

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

When I was younger my mother once told me of a biblical story in which a town would come together in order to purge themselves of sin. They would gather up a lone goat and hurl rocks and spew profanities, in many ways harming it within an inch of its life as it bled out upon the earth. They would then open the gates of the town and let the goat run away and carry all of their sins, transgressions, and their insecurities out into the wilderness in where the goat, along with all their sin, would perish. This in turn purged the town and cleansed them of their ways until it was time again to rid themselves of their wickedness. Now, as a young child I was appalled by such a story and such horrible people who could inflict pain upon an innocent being…

The social norm that I violated was singing out loud on a public place. Well I did not really get to sing loudly on a bus or train. I did however sing loudly while I was shopping in Wal-Mart. Diversity is defined as the quality or state of having many different forms, types, cultures, and more. Being from a diverse environment is considered to be a valuable characteristic where one can acknowledge and accept the differences in others. Therefore many different people are able to respect and look up to those who came from a diverse environment, or that is what people say. When I was a teenager I worked in a donut shop. It so happened that the place was sold to a family and was not a corporately owned. In the hope of saving money, they decided to cut labor and asked the hostess’ to do all the cleaning, including the washrooms. The age I was at cleaning was not my cup of tea, therefore, I made it clear to the owners I will do everything else, but clean the washrooms, as I don’t even do that at home, and my mom wouldn’t even let me. The owner’s reply was, “you people should be used to that kind of work, what do you mean you can’t do it,” and a whole lot of other inappropriate things that I won’t get into.…

I was born in San Jose, California and my family moved to Ohio, the heartland of America, soon after. I remember always peering through the window by the stairs as the snow fell then sledding down the snowy driveway with glee. During my childhood, I spent a year in China experiencing my cultural roots. My family then moved to Los Angeles where I have spent nearly thirteen years of my life exposed to a blend of different cultures and communities. The diversity encourages me to stay true to my background and enjoy standing out rather than fitting in.…

A Thousand Experiences Throughout life, individuals face different obstacles and struggles; my obstacle was my tendency to be shy. For example, when I was faced with social pressures like speaking in front of a class for a presentation, or meeting new people, I would be a nervous wreck. My palms would sweat, my voice would tremble, and it took all the strength I could muster to overcome my irrational fears. I only had a small, albeit close knit group of friends due to my introverted ways.…
