Personal Narrative: Mrs. Hanna

Improved Essays
As I grew up, sports were a good thing. They brought out the competitive side of me and, helped me met new friends. At an early age, I learned that nothing is given to you; you have to work for it. The person that taught me that was my very first coach, Coach Mariah Hanna. She was imparting a humble, confident spirit in me from the age of four and, she didn’t even know.
For the thirteen years I’ve known Mrs. Hanna she’s always been a short lady. You wouldn’t’ believe the strong voice that comes from that little body. Coach Hanna was one of those ladies that could pack a punch; she was a force to be reckoned with. Her blonde hair turns to brown depending on the season and her eyes turned from hazel to gray. In the many years I’ve known Mrs.

The first day I went to practice I will never forget the loud, pitchy voice I heard as I ran. “Push Alyia Push, if it doesn’t hurt you’re not trying hard enough!” her voice could follow you for miles on end. Since Mrs. Hanna was an athlete, she had a little of a muscular tone. It wasn’t much because it’s been a while after having two kids but, she continued to stay active. She walks with a little limp, due to a marathon she continued to run with a strained muscle in her leg. That just proves even more that she is a pusher and very determined to finish whatever she puts her mind to.
As a wife and a mom first Mrs. Hanna enjoys being with her family. I believe she is a Clemson Tigers fan so tailgating is in her blood. Before she’s a coach, Mrs. Hanna is a teacher at North District Middle School. Between having her in the classroom and the field, you wouldn’t believe that was the same women. While reading in class she would be so soft and tender, but afterschool on the track her aggressive side came out Mrs. Hanna will always be one of my favorite teachers but, she also will be a mentor to me. Coach Hanna taught me to push with all I have because if you’re going to do something, do it to the best of your ability and you’ll have no regrets. I live by that moto because you can’t go back and relive the past you can only keep pressing forward to make today better than

The most important aspect I learned through sports, is that the rival team – often considered as ‘the enemy’ – is composed of human beings, just like me and the other girls in the team. The only difference amongst us was the color of our jerseys and the school we were playing for. This further reinstated the values of sympathy and respect toward the other girls in the opposite team. Moreover, when anybody got injured, either from my team or the opposite team, we would sympathize with each other. Although we couldn’t feel their pain physically, we understood the suffering of not only physical pain, but the pain of not playing a sport you are passionate about for a…

Most parents want to enroll their kids in sports, and kids love the thrill of running up and down the soccer or lacrosse field scoring goals. Participating in recreational sports beginning at a young age teaches kids crucial lessons including leadership, teamwork, and that it is OK to make mistakes. Yes, these lessons are valuable and necessary to proper child development, but is it worth putting children at risk for injury or potential long term brain damage? Since teenagers and younger are more susceptible to injury and the possibility of injury is lower in a practice situation rather than a game situation, age and skill requirements, along with return to play plans should be implemented in sports to help limit injuries, more specifically…
