The crisp breeze rustled my hair as I walked out of my house on the fall September day with my dad drilling instructions into my head. It was my first Little League baseball game ever, and my dad wanted to make sure it wasn’t my last. Being seven years old and never touching a baseball was something that had scared me; a lot. I had no idea what to think about this foreign, petrifying, game could possibly be about. The car ride from my house was only a few minutes away from the fields where I would begin my baseball career.…

Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me.…

Twenty-two years ago on January 4th, 1994, Taryn Staley was up at Finny Cumberlane to celebrate Gary’s, Taryn’s brother, fifteenth birthday. It was her mom, her step dad, her friend (Amy), Gary, her mom’s friend, four or five of Gary’s friends, and herself who traveled up the Finny Cumberlane mountain side. Their day was spent playing in the snow and snowboarding on the small, snow-capped mountain, but the day took a turn for the worse on their way home. “At 10:00 AM everyone met at our house in Burlington with their snowboarding gear, extra clothes, etc. We also loaded up a camp stove, pans, cups, cocoa and a pot of chile with freetos dip chips for lunch.…

As a sixteen-year old high school student, one worked for minimum wage at McDonalds. The difference between one’s story and the countless stories of many is the level of responsibility with a low-wage job. According to Macionis (2012), fifteen “percent of heads of poor families worked full time, at least fifty weeks during the year, yet remained below the poverty line” (p. 36). In other words, hard work alone will not help the poor.…

    1. I never made notebooks because in 1990s, notebooks meant scribbling down the exact words as in the textbook. Instead, I used to read books or even play video games. I was scolded by many, but appreciated just by a few teachers. This appreciation was enough for me to courageously question the conventional way-Still an asset.…

“Baruch atah Adonai, noten ha’torah”, I passionately chanted before my friends, family, and the congregation of Beth Shalom. Those five Hebrew words, which had been ingrained in my memory over the past months, concluded my first aliyot; according to Rabbi Kosman, I was now a full-fledged man. No longer would I be sidelined to the kids’ table at family events nor constrained by the 10 o’clock lights-out policy. Rather, I would enjoy all the benefits that seemed to come from adulthood: rated-R movies, the occasional sip of wine at the dinner table, and access to my own personal finances.…

The House The gate swung wide open. I forcefully pushed it with a branch I found lying in a pile of leaves. It was that time of the year again, autumn leaves fell from all that was left of the bare trees, naked as it’s last shield of warmth made it’s home to the ground, soon to be scattered away as giant beings forced them out of their yards. The breeze hits me hard, I grasp my thin cardigan with all my might.…
