Personal Narrative: Moving To Puerto Rico

I was born into The Salvation Army. My parents are officers and have been for the past 22 and a half years. It is a usual situation that officers get moved every four years or so. I was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts and It was only 2 years later that I got moved to Sharon, Massachusetts. I cannot recall anything that happened. The only memories I have are from pictures. I lived in Sharon, Massachusetts for 5 years. These were probably the best 5 years of my life. I remember the anticipation my family had to find out where we were moving next. Two of my three siblings with me on the couch, holding hands, sitting in front of my parents, waiting for them to say where we were moving. Three, two, one… “We’re moving to Puerto Rico!” Wait a second; back up. Puerto Rico? Where did that come from. We have lived in Massachusetts my entire life. Why Puerto Rico? My parents explained to me that we were moving there because we are Hispanic. Tears were rolling down my face like never before. I knew that I was not excited. Still, I had no choice to move. I was seven and I was not at the age to make my own decisions. Moving to Puerto Rico took a long time to prepare for. We had eight people living in our house. We had over 200 moving boxes and 50 totes. The Salvation Army provided all the transportation for us. They took care of the …show more content…
This is a move I get to make, and I know for a fact that this move will benefit me in ways I cannot imagine. When I move, I won’t be antisocial. I will actually think positively and actually look for friendship. Tips that I would give to students moving is, be happy and not discouraged. Even though a person says something negative to you, don’t let it get to your head and ruin the rest of your years. Think positively and encourage yourself to enjoy where you are. I never did that, and I regret it. Embrace the blessing God has given you, and you will enjoy where he has placed

Florida is a land of sun palm trees and sand. Florida being a southern state with sweet tea, Publix, and Disney just a few hours away, had many perks. I had never thought of what it might be like to grow up in a northern area, or just even outside of Florida. Up until my 14th summer I had always assumed everyone lived the same way I did. From the times I hear my grandfather singing Vicente Fernandez in the shower, to the times my grandmother cooks homemade enchiladas, arroz con frijoles, and salsas, I am constantly reminded of the beautiful culture that I proudly belong to and hope to share with CCS. I would contribute my Mexican/Puerto Rican American identity in terms of expressing my culture’s music, art, and food. Coming from a close-knit Latin American family, I know I will thrive in this small, intimate residential living atmosphere. Being a bisexual person of color, I've learned to be tolerant and love others despite our differences in race, religion, ethnicity, or socioeconomic levels. Hawaii, the home of white sand beaches, pro surfing, hula dances, and warm weather. If I could move to any region within the United States, I would move to Hawaii with no hesitation. Hawaii contains a prestigious hospital and the opportunity to become a surfer. Both of which of which I have always dreamed of being a part in. Nothing would make me happier than becoming an orthopedic surgeon operating out of a Hawaiian hospital working on shark attack victims and other unlucky victims who need orthopedic repair, then go straight to the beach to surf and relax for the remainder of the day.…

In the 19 years I have been alive, I have lived in three states, five towns, eight houses, and now, two countries. Right before I finished high school my parents decided to move to Guatemala. I welcomed the change because I had been visiting Guatemala every summer since I was 15, and my heart always seemed at peace there. The closest I perpetually felt at home was when I lived in Guatemala, though I resided there for a short time. Every day greeted me with words rolling off my tongue I previously did not know, the taste of delicious and unique foods, and a breathtaking landscape, complete with the view of an active volcano outside of my bedroom window.…

I was raised in a very loud Puerto Rican home. The extended family was always over; grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and family friends. They even came over unannounced. For eight years I went to school with all of my cousins, so I saw my cousins, aunts, and uncles every day. There was always food being made, loud music and conversation, and us children running around.…

Puerto Rico, the United States’ paradise that became the biggest headache. There are 64 billion reasons behind why Puerto Rico has become a big problem for the U.S. When I tell people where I am from and that I am planning to stay in the United States, they ask me if I am crazy and that why would I prefer the cold state of Pennsylvania over the warm tropical paradise in the Caribbean. Yes, Puerto Rico is great, it is beautiful, it is magical, if you go on vacation, but if you are looking for progress it is not the paradise you are looking for. Usually when there is a problem we look for someone to blame, but in this case, they are many issues that contributed to the worst economic crisis of Puerto Rico.…

The food wasn’t the only reason I flew out to Puerto Rico. I was there to escape from the cold weather I had back home, the rain, the snow, the darkness, the layers of clothes and wind. I could not wait to enjoy the sun, the beach, the coqui(a frog you are only able to find on the island) the fresh ocean water, the mountains, sand in between my toes and the beautiful palm trees that had coconuts hanging. I sat on my grandmother’s porch the sun was beaming against my face. My cheeks felt like a heater but I was enjoying every second of it.…

Relocating is one of the most stressful experiences that a person may go through in their lifetime. This is because moving requires you to say farewell to things that are familiar and then adjust to a new life in your new neighborhood or country. Bidding your friends, co-workers and family goodbye is a sad event, and facing your new surroundings without the comfort of familiar things is daunting. In addition to the stress that comes with saying goodbye and adjusting, relocating to another place may also be expensive, especially if you are moving to another country.…
