Personal Narrative: Moving To Oregon

Decent Essays
Ten years ago, February 2007, I set out on an adventure and moved to Oregon. Growing up in the Black Hills, the forest was our playground. We would spend our days, hiking, biking, making forts, and climbing trees. Now that I live in Central Oregon, there are not very many pine trees and forest around. I know that might not be what you think of with Oregon, but Central Oregon is high desert. I love driving over Mt. Hood towards Portland, because it reminds me of the Black Hills.

When I have traveled, I have seen a lot of different things such as landscapes, air quality, plant life, etc. When I was 2, I moved to Miami, Florida, which I don’t remember much about. Then we moved to Columbus, Georgia where I spent half of my childhood. Georgia looks way different than here in Virginia. The air and the land is drier and it’s more humid down there.…

Just before I moved to Cedaredge Colorado, the earth under my feet shattered and sent me falling into a place of unknowns. After arriving in Cedaredge, I surveyed several churches and found Cedaredge Community United Methodist Church. The church members took me in like they had known me for my entire life. This restored the ground underneath my feet. After I began participating in the church, I told the congregation that my mother had been in prison for two years.…

Growing up, my family and I weren’t very religious by any means. My parents grew up in Catholic families, but when they moved away from their families, they moved away from God too. Every time we were stationed in a new place, my parents always blamed not going to church on the military and how we would always be moving. My sister and I didn’t mind this, because we didn’t really know what church was, and didn’t understand the meaning of it, but when we moved to Louisiana in 2012, I met a friend that would change this. I met this girl Samantha, who seemed to be in a few of my classes.…

When we moved back to Los Fresnos, my mom would take my brother and I to the library in the summer at the beginning of my sixth grade year. I remember the first time my mother took my brother and I to the library. The long rows of bookshelves were a true sight to behold. In that instant, it was as if my mom read my mind. “Now, let’s go get you two your first library card.”…

The day I moved to Georgia, we had been living in Texas for five years when my mom said we were moving to Georgia. I graduated my senior year from high school I thought she was lying, but she said that the VA center down in Texas was awful, and she didn’t like it there anyways, but she really wanted a better VA system. Then we started packing every month putting stuff in storage, and having to do open houses every other week, we had to clean, vacuum and take our pets with us every time we left the house until our house finally sold. Then we started looking at houses In Grovetown, also for a good school system then we waited 3 weeks for a house because we were looking at spots with upstairs and down stairs, a big backyard for or dogs, also a school…

During 2008, my family moved from New York to Georgia. Technically, the only person moved was me. My mom and dad stayed behind. My dad went to Atlanta and purchased a restaurant in Perimeter Mall ( upscale mall in Dunwoody, GA) where we opened up Malibu Wings and another one near Georgia State University on Peachtree Street. I finally got paid after all these years.…

One cold and dreary day in January, I got home from an uneventful day at school. I never would have guessed what was about to happen or thought that this would ever happen to me. I was just a quiet freshman in high school. My father sat down with my family and told us that we were about to move to Texas. Moving here from North Carolina when I was four changed my life completely, I was away from my family who I lived with my whole life, thrown into a school with a bunch of kids who lived here since they were born and told to “make friends.” This changed the next 13 years of my life to something I can never picture not having. The first four years, both my parents had full time jobs and my grandma helped raise me a lot, she taught me so many manners and how to behave, she even ended up living across the street from me for 2 of those years, they were rough for my parents, new baby, just moving, having to find jobs, making friends, and getting food on the table for me. Thats where my amazing family came in, with bringing home cooked meals…

Living in Olathe, Kansas, a large suburb outside of Kansas City, did not prepare me for the move to Salina. The benefits of living in a larger suburb are that the high schools can really help you prepare for the transition to college level classes. I did not take the help the school gave out into consideration when going to classes. My senior year was when everything clicked into place and I knew what I want to do with my life, and that was flying.…
