1. Moving to new school and coursework explanation I moved to Taiwan because of my father’s job. We did not receive the information until late summer of July 2016. That news was urgent and my family only had one month at the time to move. During the hectic period, my parents and I tried our best to find a school for me for the school year of 2016-2017. The Dominican International School was the only affordable choice available to us. Due to the late enrollment, I could not sign up for any AP classes since classes had already started. Finally, two weeks into a school year, I was able to enroll in a Computer Science AP course when a slot opened up. Even though I did not have a chance to enroll in more advanced math and science courses to continue pursuing my passion in mathematics, I did the best I could to learn the materials myself and followed a few free Coursera Math courses.
This year, I enrolled in three classes, the maximum number of courses a student is allowed to enroll in. I truly enjoyed AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, and AP Comparative Government Politics…

Unlike typical high school’s curriculum in Vietnam, at the Dominican International School, I had to take three years of second language becuase Vietnamese wasn’t counted (Starting from Grade 9 to Grade 11) during my two years of Grade 11 and 12 at the school. I decided to pursue Japanese. I took Japanese grade 9 and 11 simultaneously during my Grade 11 year, despite not knowing any Japanese beforehand. My parents and my teacher were skeptical at first, for it is almost impossible to not only study grade 11 Japanese with no knowledge but also do an extra course of one year. Thanks to the support from my teacher and my classmates, I was able to successfully follow the rigorous Japanese

Seven years ago, I left my country to live with a host family and study in the States. It was not easy for a 16-year-old girl to learn a second language and adjust herself into a different culture and environment. Not only that I have overcome the hardship, but I also had a chance to share Thai culture to my American friends and family.…

In the world we live in now it is very easy to overlook the importance of community. It not only gives a sense of belonging, but also forms a support group for individuals that fall on hard times. Volunteering through the Michigan State University Student Literacy Corps, demonstrated to me the need for community support in a child’s education. This organization tutors k-5 children in reading and writing, free of charge. Entering in this program I was told that the capital area is among the poorest regions in the state, and has an adult literacy rate of below 75%.…

Born and raised by a single mother in East Los Angeles, my perception of going to college was narrow. In my community, college was viewed as an option as opposed to the next step in life. Most students who graduated from my high school either began working or started a family. College was not viewed as a necessity and instead, was seen as a privilege, or a luxury. Students from my area were not encouraged to go to college and in most cases, lacked the knowledge, financial, and emotional support that would otherwise drive them towards attending or even applying to college.…

“I never look back, darling! It distracts from the now.” “The Incredibles,” became a special movie for me after seeing it for the first time many years ago. However, what brings me back to this movie as a young adult is this line from Edna Mode that shows a philosophy I try to hold myself by today. With the onslaught of living with a depressive disorder that affects only 11% of adolescents in the US, and the challenges of finding a place to live while helping my single mom with my brother, I find that looking forward is the only thing I can do.…

As a child, I never had the advantage of having parents who knew all the tricks of how to live in the United States. I always assumed that I was at a disadvantage compared to the families that have been doing this for generations, however through my experiences I learned that it’s not where you come from that defines us; it’s where we go that matters. Everything I was learning for the first time, my parents were learning for the first time. Through my educational struggles, I learned about the American school system. Through my achievements and letdowns, I gained confidence in my actions and my decisions.…

Both my Pre-Calculus teacher, and my Calculus teacher tried to discourage me from doing that. However, I was ready for the challenge…

In my Education for Social Change in the United States (EDU 300) class, we have learned so many things about the roots of some issues our society still facing today. In this class, there had been many answers to the questions I thought couldn’t be answered, because I used to think that things just happen. There are two important lessons that will stay in my mind thanks to this class. The first one is that we, all, in a way or another have privileges and the second one is that there is no justice without equity. These are powerful lessons, that will be present in my mind and will be implemented in my social action projects.…
