Personal Narrative: Moving To Guatemala

Improved Essays
In the 19 years I have been alive, I have lived in three states, five towns, eight houses, and now, two countries. Right before I finished high school my parents decided to move to Guatemala. I welcomed the change because I had been visiting Guatemala every summer since I was 15, and my heart always seemed at peace there. The closest I perpetually felt at home was when I lived in Guatemala, though I resided there for a short time. Every day greeted me with words rolling off my tongue I previously did not know, the taste of delicious and unique foods, and a breathtaking landscape, complete with the view of an active volcano outside of my bedroom window. However, eventually I had to leave the breathtaking country where the people decorated in gorgeous colors surrounded me. I had to return to the United States to continue my education and go to University. Not being with my parents was a challenge I knew I could face head on; my parents raised me to be very self-sufficient. However, I did not anticipate how arduous it would be when I felt stranded while all my friends went home for Labor Day, birthdays, and long weekends. I was left with …show more content…
However, I’ve grown out of my ‘nomad soul’ phase, and I want my heart to feel at ease. The last year and a half of my life I have been grasping for any sense of normalcy and stability. In this search, I found the most stable effects in my life were the people I surrounded myself with. I have placed my heart and my home in the hands of my family and friends who I love and trust. Most importantly, I placed the idea of home in myself. Home is where I am. It is my state of being, my spiritual health, and where I feel comfortable and happy at any given moment. I never have to worry about coming home. The space and the body that I occupy is always going to be home enough for

On March 12-19, a team of fourteen high-schoolers and two leaders from Gilbert went on a missions trip near the city of Retalhuleu, Guatemala. Specifically, the team went to a small village by the name of La Tercera Calle. The goal of the trip was to build a cement floor in a church that the villagers had long been working on. This project took up almost the entirety of the week, and while the work was immensely strenuous, it was strangely palatable, bordering even on enjoyable. Nonetheless, the process required dozens of hours of laborious man-power, and consisted of several steps.…

I never knew a little girl from Guatemala could have such an impact on my life. We did not speak the same language, and it took two translators to find out her name: Lady Maria. While on a mission trip in this country, 9 people from my youth group traveled to Panimache, a village two hours deep in the mountains. I noticed her even before exiting the van, and instantly knew I would spend the day with her. I connect well with children, but she was different.…

It is said that experiences make who we are, but I also think that experiences lead us to take and discover roads which probably we would have never considered pursuing if we hadn't had those experiences---this is my case. Born and raise in Panama---The Bridge and heart of the Americas--- I had the opportunity or fate to live through some interesting historical episodes: On December 20th, 1989, I was thirteen years old when I woke up to a surprising discovery that Panama has been invaded, or liberated from Noriega. I did not quite understand what this meant. The only thing I remember is seeing U.S. military soldiers in the front yard of my home, carrying weapons and directing my family and me to go inside our home, and the fear and confusion…

This happened to my great-grandparent and his brother, who were the two elder brothers (in total they were 12 children); they were living in Sonsonate, a very poor part of El Salvador. It was a rainy day and their mother was incredibly sick that she could not move from her bed, and it was urgent that a doctor review her before getting worst. My great-grandpa and his brother went in the middle of the rain and walked approximately 2km until they got in the doctor’s house. The doctor rejected to go and see their mom because he thought by their appearance that they would not be able to pay him for his service. Since that very moment, my great-grandpa and his brother agreed that they won’t let that situation happen and that they would study and…

When living in Guatemala I felt fear for the reason that my father,ULISES HERNANDEZ was interacting with people that would sell drugs and he would do it as well. He told my mother to take me with her because he did not want me paying for his mistakes in the future. This was one of the reasons and the other reason was that when I was about 11 years of age, gang members wanted to commit crimes and I did not want to. They started looking for me and wanting me to steal different items that they needed. If I would not do it they would threaten me by telling me that they were going to beat me and cause some type of damage toward me.…

During my senior summer break I join my church on the mission trip to deliver textbooks to rural communities in Costa Rica. Months before our trip we had countless meetings to prepare us for what we would carry out while on our trip. One of the preparations was practicing teaching English to the kids using the reading materials we were supplying. In addition to the meetings we hosted fundraising events to pay for the materials we were delivering. One of our fundraising events was a pancake breakfast where the team members made and cleaned up after the breakfast.…

The day I got the acceptance email to join Global Glimpse, a non-organization seeking opened minded students willing to travel into a Central America, I became filled with astonishment. Little did I know that this trip was going to define one of my important feature: adaptability. When the day finally came, my family helped me pack my bags and we headed off to the airport to meet my delegation. Approaching the group I was mesmerized of the amount diversity we had in the group; we had people from Palo Alto, Oakland, San Jose, Davis, individuals had traveled all over the world and those with a strong athletics background. Then there was me a 5’ 8” asian kid who had never traveled beyond California.…
