Personal Narrative: Moving To Guatemala

Decent Essays
By going abroad and having absorbed different landscapes, cultures, and values, I am able to analyze more complex problems and find new ways to solve them.
I moved to Guatemala, where I first had a notion of life preservation through the Mayans, the Native Indian tribes. I went to reservations to provide assistance to the people and see the Mayan pyramids and was given a lecture by a leader of the community, who taught me about Mayan history and traditions as well as natural preservation, geography, and architecture. Being in this country, I learn how to appreciate other cultures and by being surrounded by beautiful landscapes I learned more about being aware of the world around me. My father was transferred, by his company, to Sao Paulo,

Two plump brown faces peered around the corner at me, their wide brown eyes taking in my pale complexion and straight brown hair. Hearing their giggles I turned and looked up at them before responding with one of the only phrases I knew of the spanish language, “hola” “¿cómo estás?” This caused a panic and they quickly disappeared, laughing to themselves and speaking in a language I had only begun to understand. A few seconds later I could feel their eyes staring down at me again, I quickly shot my head around to stare at them again, this caused them to dart away even quicker before being followed by a uproar of giggles. This experience was something I had grew quite accustomed to in my short time in Guatemala.…

Mid-summer 2014, my family and I spent two weeks in Costa Rica. It was a vacation filled with many unforgettable memories, and was without a doubt the highlight of my break. We did so much that trip, I can’t even recall all of the places we went and things we did. However, there was one event I could never forget, no matter how much I try. Costa was exhilarating from the start despite all of the plane rides we had to take to get there.…

My parents are from an impoverished country in Central America called El Salvador. Leaving their home has always been hard for them, but they had certain difficulties that made them unable to stay. They often told me stories of what it was like over there. They told hilarious tales about the work they did and described their home as a poor but beautiful place. Their eyes lit up whenever they told these stories and it was easy to see how much they miss it.…

This summer I was very fortunate to go to Dominican Republic. Before this trip I haven’t visited Dominican Republic in over five years, so I was pretty eager to visit. When I first stepped out of the plane, I took in a breath. I feel that the air over there smells so different since many people over there burn their garbage, I actually like that smell. The streets in Dominican Republic are very bumpy and have a lot of motorists, so during my visit I did not hesitate to drive.…

Never again have I experienced the same joy and love for life that I once did in my home country El Salvador. Though it is a nation enveloped in violence and poverty, living in it taught me to appreciate life and the wonders of nature. While the days were filled with chaos and people trying to survive another day, the night gave rise to the moon, stars, peace and tranquility. One moonless night out in the countryside, as I gazed upon the most marvelous starry night sky, my perspective changed. Surrounded by the soft sound of rustling leaves and total darkness, I witnessed the grandeur of the universe.…

The moment that I have chosen is when I went to Guatemala last summer and met my cousins, aunts, and uncles for the first time. There was a big gathering with all of my family members, and there was a lot of food too. The kind of food that I remember eating was pupusas and tamales. While I was eating all this food, everyone came up to me and asked me “If I was in school?”, “What was I studying?”, “Did I have a girlfriend?” normal questions like that.…

I am a missionary. After only learning about missionaries from the olden days whose true motives were to colonize and conquer regions, this statement at first seemed inapplicable to my life. However, my feelings toward this statement completely changed after I went on my first mission trip to Nicaragua and met some villagers who will always remain dear to me. As the child of hardworking Indian immigrants, I have lived without fear of the outside world. My dad is a physician who earns a steady income, making it so that there is always food on the table, a roof over my heads, and access to whatever I might need.…

Last year I had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala, and visit my relatives for the first time. It felt like a special moment; there was tears and laughter when we all reunited. Even though we were there for a month, it felt like only a week. I had already gone used to waking up, and saying hello to my grandma. It seemed like a routine, walking to my aunt and uncle’s house to eat breakfast, and brush my teeth.…

By the time I was a senior in high school, I had already traveled to Guatemala once for a service trip. Now, towards the end of February break of my senior year, I was in the middle of the rural countryside in Guatemala, traveling a familiar rocky road in a grey van. I was with fellow students who went on the trip the year before, and we were on our way to visit the community we had become acquainted with exactly a year earlier. Going down a winding, bumpy road in a strange country with a less than careful driver was nerve-wracking to say the least. Every rock and pothole made itself known by jolting the van and everyone in it whenever we drove over one.…

I found myself in the dirt, my face baking in a dark hut with light peeking through the cracks, trying to form the fat tortillas with my hands in the way my new friends had taught me. This is beautiful I thought. I got to stare human vulnerability in the face and step into what it was like to try and survive in it. The El Salvadorian village I was in had enough corn and resources to almost comfortably provide for the community, even though the area was so remote. It was a moment of the challenge and also the hope of humanity.…
